This is all very well if you have a friendly, high level scripting language like Ruby, but I'm definitely glad I don't have to write a C compiler where functions can take arbitrary blocks of code.

I think it's nice that it leaves you to draw your own conclusion, and doesn't preach or talk down to you, one way or the other.

Well, getting Linux working on a laptop was more a case of exciting driver wrangling, rather than performance limiting.

I'm really interested in computer architecture. I somehow doubt that there's a company that's going to sit me down and do that straight out of undergrad...

Yeah, whilst he mentions work and school, there's nowhere to just be social with people in that schedule. What do you do if you want to go to the cinema or the theatre, or just the pub?

I was fairly sure that NT was originally going to be a microkernel, but it ended up being really slow, so they had to push everything into a more monolithic architecture.

I don't know if it's just me, but the use of passive voice really irritated me. Like the author was entirely correct, and there could be no debate.

It makes me wonder how strong the cylinders are. They look quite small, so it seems like with a tool shaped like a "T" with a wide top you'd be able to force a lock open.

I've just had my first course in AI, and being interested in games, I was curious to see how the reasonably specific, theoretical techniques we were taught could fit into game design. This was a reasonably interesting example, but I think I'd be more interested in some specific applications, although I appreciate these might be jealously guarded secrets...

"More retina" is meaningless: the whole pointer is that it's indistinguishable from normal use distance.

You can say "higher resolution", or even "retina when held closer to the face", but "more retina" really is nonsense!

It seems to me that most of these aren't controversial at all.

I disagree with one of the points supporting "Unit testing won’t help you write good code.", though, where he implies that writing the code reveals the edge cases. Surely the edge cases are something you should have carefully considered before starting to code? I've found that crystallising the edge cases as a test before writing the function can be really helpful.

Am I the only one who thinks wanting your employees to work at your company "12-16 hours a day" is surely not a mark of a good company. If I worked 16 hours a day, I know I'd not be having enough sleep to do useful work. I think I'd rather work with well balanced human beings, rather than obsessive, robotic workaholics...

It's interesting that to me, this looks more "3D" than normal street view. I would guess it's the thing about the human brain filling in the detail...

I don't know why he mentions recommending to pure apple households. Surely if every computer (/phone/tablet) in your house is made by apple, you don't really care what anybody says about the competition.

Equally, I'll bet that no startup has ever failed because the developers spent too long configuring their editors.

Why the hell does it matter so much to you that people enjoy being good at using a powerful tool? If you don't want to see editor articles, downvote them, or move to another website, or filter them out (either mentally, or programatically).

Configuring an editor can be thought of as a similar thing: it can be a fun break from programming, and if it even slightly increases productivity, then that's a win.

I don't think any editor person would argue that using an a particular editor gives a really massive increase in their productivity, but why shouldn't we use specialist editors? It just feels good to write with them, and that can't be a bad thing.

Little low on technical detail. "Works synergistically with Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor", honestly!

Interesting though: will it be developed into a graphics board, returning to Larabee? What will NVidia and AMD (ATI) do in response?

I think the problem with this question is that "fragmentation " is fairly ill-defined.

For example, you can say that ML fragmented into SML and OCAML, but then what's Haskell? Is it a fragment of SML? Well, not really. But then, SML and OCAML are significantly different languages, which have taken their inspiration from sources outside of their "parent language" as well.

On top of this, look at, for example. Boo. Boo is a lot like Python, but is it a fragment of Python? Also, C, C++, C#, Java, now even Go.

I think the point of this is what is the point at which a new language becomes no longer a "fragment" of its parent, and becomes a new language in its own right?

I was part of the audience for a Peter Molyneux talk recently, and half the questions just seemed to be statements. Was just thinking, what's a good answer to that?
