nothing wrong with this design itself but some details of his example are problematic. 6km down from the midway point between LA and SanFran is loaded with faults and I'm no geology expert either but this close to the ring of fire I bet rock in that vicinity would be pretty toasty. Sure, maybe not exactly magma but could easy be like 160F.

Damn that summabitch! I typed that whole monstrosity into my TRS-80 Model III the month that came out and it didn't work! I spent a whole summer debugging and got some things to work but the program never ran right. Granted it might have been the few subtle differences between M1 & M3 but still, my first frustrating experience with hacking someone else's code. I was 17, what a waste of an irreplaceable summer.

Don't suppose any body has a text file version? would still like to copy & paste it into QBasic and finally make it work right. Just outta pure spite.

Would, could, maybe and might. Do you really think it is a good idea to present findings that are a product of modelling to a bunch of folks who spend a lot of their time tweaking, freaking and hacking just such constructs? It is an almost unavoidable trap to get a computer to tell you what you want to hear. When someone is certain enough to say that this or that WILL happen, there will be more reason to take notice.

Well, the only way for that to work thematically is if the person is in fact a hacker. I use a pretty broad interpretation which would include Bill Gates but probably leave out Steven Levitt unless he was going to discuss/share the software tools he uses to arrive at his results. Also, more physical hackers like Adrian Bowyer of RepRap and some of the guys behind the Hacklabs and Hackerspaces.

Discard the unnecessary. It isn't always easy to tell but there are often subtle signs around what is and isn't necessary. Unnecessary things usually feel sort of shadowy in your mind or require an additional effort that doesn't fit square into what you are doing. Think about what it's like to carry too many groceries into the house at once. Necessary things are solid and leap forward into your mind with evident emphasize. Be ruthless with your pruning of those unnecessary branches and your trip down the rabbit hole will be both smoother and more thrilling.
