I was wondering what the difference is between the hatred for the win 8 change compared to the change from win 3.x to 95 (nt 4)?
Was it just because not so many people used win 3.x and so ms could change it without so much moaning?
If metro was developed instead of the windows 95 start menu, would it have been hated as much??
Totally agree, I have been using 8 / 8.1 since it's release and really don't miss the start menu, I am forced to use xp quite often and cannot stand it, the amount of times I bring up the start menu up and type to bring up an app and the start menu just does nothing just makes me cry.
I have seen some people put the windows 7 style start menu on win 8 - it just doesn't make sense to me, the world moves on, things change, learn to adapt and life is so much sweeter!

"If you send an email you've proactively given yourself the opportunity to blame the victim, who doesn't like that?" - there is a lot to love in that, maybe I will fire up outlook!
I'll add to why I think it is so bad, there is so god damn much of it!
I am not trying to convert anyone but I would hate to get 100+ emails a day, how do you get anything else done?
Since Monday morning (all of Monday and 3/4 of Tuesday) I have had 21 emails, mostly I have been cc'd by customers and they are irrelevant for me.
For the out of work hours thing I have had a lot of emails out of hours and felt that I had to reply - I do accept that if I turn off emails out of work then I'm less likely to be dragged in out of work and maybe other people can read stuff and put it to the back of their minds or just ignore!
I really felt it liberating to stop receiving so much email, I highly recommend it!

Basically work email is horrible, do all you can to stop it.
It creates individual silos of knowledge that only people included are party to, whenever someone leaves they take this with them (would you start a job and take on someone else's old mailbox, yuck!)
It drags people into work 24/7, especially in global organisations but also in 9-5 local time type places, yuck!
I've worked hard to get everyone at the start-up I work at to stop sending each other emails and use yammer instead - this has worked remarkably well especially among the techies.
Make your life better and do what you can to stop using email.
I always thought they take off backwards so I hit behind them and have quite a high hit rate
It is pretty useful for ui stuff, you can start a wait cursor in a button event, do what you need to then put the cursor back when your done, all in one thread without having to use background threads or anything.
It is pretty simple for that scenario and avoids the cross thread marshalling you need to do in win forms.
I make this journey everyday, pretty cool to see it as it used to be, it is a shame it is so fast.
You can see when they go through the first big tunnel (the merstham tunnel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merstham_tunnels) they enter at the same time and exit at the same time so the old one must be (maybe??) sped up.
It would have been interesting to see what Gatwick airport was like then but it doesn't really show it, other than there being a big space on the right hand side that isn't there any more (2:11).
