I think you should just accept how other people want to discuss things on the internet. If you can't handle the mainstream then find a niche were your own brand of 'intellectual' discussion is enforced by nazi moderation (don't take my Godwin's law descent as a bad thing, nazi-like moderation can be a good thing).

If Hacker News is evolving into something you don't like, then find somewhere else to discuss things. You have no right to complain that the place you've settled in isn't to your liking when you're on the internet. The reason why you don't have that right? Because you can just go the fuck elsewhere, seriously move on, settle somewhere else, see if it's to your liking, if you don't fit in don't whine about it, just move on again. Petty stuff.

You seem to know your way round words so I'd advise freelance writing. Submit a few articles to a few places that are relevant to your interests and fairly current. Naturally taking time to get a feel for the style on the site. Make sure the editors are aware that you're giving them free stuff as a good will gesture and are available for more content if they need it. You should be able to get to $300 this way fairly easily, but it may take some time for responses, and a few rejections if people don't like your writing, but eventually you'll get a few gigs, maybe some steady ones, for monthly, weekly articles.

If you think you can write something good enough (and it's not that hard to be better than 90% of the target audience) then it'd be a nice quick way of getting the cash.

If someone else is cc'ed in then people feel pressure to reply as they aren't just ignoring one person, there's a whole other person expecting a reply. Even if that person is someone they've never met, or know of.

This is not a satisfactory experiment, at least from the article, which may be making the wrong conclusion from a study that doesn't make that claim itself.

The problem is that the Yupno could have a divergent mental makeup from other races. Or that early in their formative years Yupno kids replace the intuitive number line with the Yupno number system by way of example. The study's evidence is based on testing adults, and then makes conclusions on whether we're born with the knowledge or learn it young. You can't make that conclusion with that data set.

The premise may well be true, I won't knock it, but the article's claim is flawed. What may well just be a cool anthropology study on a divergent culture is possibly being warped into a sensationalist headline.

This is so dumb. If a business wants it's latest idea/product to be kept on the down low then you should just respect that. Don't get all high and mighty about it. A business is entitled to keeping its projects under wraps, its how they stay ahead of their competition. Otherwise other companies can just come in, develop their own version and even beat the other company to the punch. Imagine if video game studios had their projects leaked from day 1, or a big tech company. They'd find themselves surrounded by competing products as soon as they launch, if not before.

Sign the damn NDA, it's doing you no harm, and if it is, don't sign it and don't take your employer's money. (and grow up)

Make a website offering a free service that a moderate amount of people would use/could be convinced to use. Monetise via ads, and bam passively fund yourself for a few months whilst the site rises and fades.

Amount of income depends on site design (probably quite good), type of subject site tackles (how much scope there is for a visitor checking the site to see related ads that they would then go on to click).

For instance a week or so ago one guy came along with a passive site that gave away simple, free gift certificate templates. He was getting a few hundred dollars every week. Not enough to live on, easily enough to just feed him, could be replicated for more income.

This is your busking. Dirty dirty ad revenue from sites that do stuff the common man would take hours doing themselves.

Any attempt at interstellar travel in the near-future is likely to be pointless only because humanity will likely invent a faster way of travelling between stars before the first mission is completed.

Why send a craft toward the nearest star if it'll take the thing a hundred years when in a decade we might be able to halve that time? Only once we've gotten to grips with local space travel, and really pushed the limits of speed will we be able to appraise an attempt at interstellar travel.

And hey we might figure out faster-than-light one day, we've surprised ourselves before, no reason we can't do it again.

The video of the flight just screams fake, it's like the uncanny valley feeling. You just know something is wrong with what you're watching. Almost there though, all very elaborate.

r/gaming in my opinion, very good demographic, they're aren't just PC/console nuts, but actual game enthusiasts who will have an interest in games across every medium they have access to which will include iOS. Be prepared for them asking about Android though.

Should be obvious but put it up on Reddit too, free marketing. Though it's kind of pot luck whether your submission will draw attention, although somebody else might copy your submission and that may get better attention. And hey who cares? As long as it climbs, no reason why it couldn't see the front page.

Used to use Launchy loads a few years ago, brilliant little program, moved on the Executor http://executor.dk/ for a bit more power (keyboard shortcuts specifically). Launchy may have updated to compete since then though.

I think this program could be particularly useful for Windows 8 and it's lack of start menu.

No car. Simply because the upfront cost was too much, fuel just keeps getting higher and public transport/walking has been completely adequate.

Only time I've needed a car is when moving house, but even then a hired Van has proven far more useful than a car.

Also parking in Brighton (UK) is an absolute nightmare, residential permits cost <£150 a year, and that's after the queue for getting one.

I like this, I don't love it, but I definitely like it.

There's two aspects of running a business in question here. One is the bureaucracy of reporting your existence and finances to the Companies House and HMRC, the other is managing yourself and any employees.

The former has become so complex and time consuming that I opt for using services to do the job for me, whilst I concentrate on making a living. (or at least I hope to when and if I decide to go Freelance 100% of the time) It's much easier to have professional bureaucrats handle the bureaucracy than learn how to do it myself.

That being said I'll never do something without a bit of research, and the more transparent the service is the better. Communicating in simple terms what's being done with my information is important.

Found the catch (though it's not really a catch, easily worth the discounted price):

I'm disappointed that it won't intepret gmt and bst when entered into the search bar, but it clearly knows what they are in the results.

Still USB 2.0? Surely that wasn't a new industry standard that they found too difficult to implement?
