I want my 5 minutes back. What an absolute waste of time this was.

Such a cute read (I mean that in the best way possible). I'm quite a social person and it's really cool to see someone be so systemic about it. But I would not have the balls to just talk to random people in the way you did it, and I really admire that about you!
Totally agree with this. Blizzard nowadays is a giant, but nobody would have blamed them if they remained a small studio, trying to protect what they've worked hard for to create. Just because they have a lot of money now, doesn't legally change a thing. It sucks because Blizzard has become a shitty company, and I'd like these types of devs from Turtle WoW to be able to continue their work, but you have to draw the line somewhere.
Out of curiosity, as a fellow dev I'm interested in how you go about reverse engineering these types of things. I assume for networking, you keep track of what goes in and out of the live game. How do you go about pathing? How do you reverse engineer spells, how they scale over levels, and how bosses work, when they spawn, and how they spawn (based on non time based factors) ?
I think this comment deserves some nuance. Every company has to comply to local laws. Unless you want to run something illegal, at which point it's not a very reliable alternative for all your mail and more.
Proton in some cases was forced to turn over whatever they knew of a few accounts, according to Swiss law. They try to obfuscate as much as possible, so they can't turn over complete e-mail conversations. But some info is in there, and they have to turn that over. But (correct me if I'm wrong) they have to only comply to Swiss law, when there's a court order.
I think the real crime here is that browsers are able to probe which extensions you have installed.
I was just wondering why this process is not automated. Why do these graphics require redrawing? Resolution difference from EGA?
This sounds so snobby. VGA Loom was absolutely stunning. I can understand that you may appreciate EGA more, but "messed up" sounds hyperbolic imo.
While I agree that I'd like to know the more esoteric concepts of the 303, you could have worded it differently.
SFML definitely needs more love than it's receiving.
Access on mobile would be main reason. Perhaps that’s an iOS limitation, and Dropbox on Android is just a perfect replacement.
Exactly. Like someone stated, it was a bit like "draw the rest of the fucking owl"
Loved the intro but that code sample could've used proper variable names.
If you know what Synology is, you know it's more than just network based storage.
Off topic, but why are you one of those people who do a full screen “subscribe to my mailing list” overlay? I never understand why you’d wanna do that.
He gives reasons why it didn’t work for him. He gives 10 pillars of his personality, 4 of these pillars were standing due to his company ownership. You don’t need to have the exact same pillars, but you need to project it upon your own life and see how selling the company would effect your personality. Then consider it for yourself if it’s worth it.
I am hoping this gives publishers an important role of becoming the quality gatekeeper. The publisher has the relationship with the writer and ensures a certain level of quality. If a writer keeps coming up with nonsense (AI or not), they’ll cut ties. For me as someone who reads about 3-4 books a year, I don’t see an issue with this. It sucks for this indie market, but even before AI, someone had to plough through the shit.
Ironically, I have no idea what you’re implying with this reply. Should I drop the usage of the word ‘just’? Isn’t it clear what I’m saying?
Can’t you just test the last digit of main’s arg and get the best of both worlds?
The end.
Oh my God. I used to grab MIDI’s from here in my mid to late 90s game development days. This opened up a chamber in my brain that had been closed for 20+ years.
What’s your vision on the replaceability of the human programmer in the next, say, 10 years?
That’s like saying a sports game doesn’t need a referee because players should follow the rules. At times you perhaps don’t follow them as close because you’re too caught up. So it’s nice to have a party that oversees it.
Was wondering the exact same thing. But my brain stopped after ‘jet’.
Kind of ironic that this site bothered me with one of those full screen, must-click-away, overlays trying to get me to subscribe to their newsletter.
That’s the warm feeling of acceptance.
I tried this once at work, because it seems like such a trivial task. Spoiler: it wasn’t.
Having said that, I learned a lot from it. So I wouldn’t say don’t do it. You’ll probably learn from it. Just don’t expect to make the next MongoDB or MySQL :)
Hahahahah I’m interested in what he said on IRC. Got some examples?
I loved the part where he was still with id; how he grew up, and how id came to be. The magic of that founding id games makes you wish you were a part of that group. After that, the Ion Storm stuff gives some context to the failure, which was interesting to read. But it becomes a bit more incoherent. Towards the end, post Ion Storm, it just feels like he's going through notes he wrote down, and you're reading them in a chronological order. All in all one of my favorite books, but the end was a bit of a drag.
OK, thank you :)
