If there is enough content to fill a book, then it's fine. The issue is that usually, there's enough for about two chapters, and then it's just padding.

The problem is when someone writes one viral blog post, then decides to pad it out and sell it as a book. If you can find the original post, you get the entire substance for free in ten minutes.

"Shortage" means exactly that. It doesn't mean "there's no GPUs at all." In a gasoline shortage, prices go up and there are lines at the pump, but there are still cars on the road.

"Baked ambient occlusion" does exist. It only works well in games where most objects are fixed. If there's a lot of flexibility in where objects are placed, then movable objects will stick out too much (they will lack the AO shading). It sounds like you're proposing using it only on static walls, which seems like it'd be totally viable.

I just think that Protobuf is not a good format for writing reliable software that aims for decades of usage.

I am not a fan of Protobuf at all, but it's already demonstrated its ability to ship extremely reliable software with multi-decade lifespans. It's one of the few things Google _hasn't_ deprecated, and it's the backbone of the search and ads stack.

For a maintainer it's way easier to tell their own agent to reimplement the same idea.

This only makes sense if you assume the original PR was just vibe-coded with minimal human effort. Maybe one day but I don't think we are there yet.

As much as I agree with the spirit of your post, standards did in fact change after the Therac-25 incident. That was nearly 50 years ago, after all! There are very high quality bars for medical equipment.

All the same, they don't need a thousand copies of one GitHub repo. They need a thousand different copies of various unrelated repos. Maybe some disc duplicators can handle that without constant user involvement, but all the ones I've worked with are designed around mass replication of one individual ISO.
