I live in an Apartment building from 1964, got doubled sided windows, and during the winter I do not need to turn on any heating on 98% of the days. And the quality of housing there is no difference between owning and renting....

sure not many can afford an EV, but there is also a large part of the population does not own a car at all, because of public transit which is a way better reduction in the energy requirements per person. There are even a lot of people that own a car but go to work using public transit.

Whether or not Apple has a monopoly is difficult to say, especially in the traditional / original sense.
The thing is, let us take the US as an example, even though there is a duopoly between IOS and Android, depending on the social circle people may not have a real choice. Remember the green bubble blue bubble fiasco in that even children are peer pressured into getting an iPhone. And until Apple won't offer iMessage on Android with exactly the same features IOS user are kind of forced to staying on IOS or look for other less wane friends. If this bind is gone, the argument we often hear here: "just buy an android" becomes valid.
I wouldn't describe, the process of recognizing your mistakes as self hate. As a German, I know my country is not perfect, none is, and I recognize that past mistakes should not happen again. Smart people learn from mistakes and try not to repeat them.
Sure compared to the US most Germans are not patriotic or are blindly loving their country. But compared to the US what over country emotionally so invested in being number 1 that everything that was bad or does not work / could be better is ignored?
The US is like an Ostrich, as soon as it is uncomfortable they put their head in the sand and yell we are the best, we are number. It can also be compared to conservatives labeling liberals as snow flakes and ridiculing save spaces, while at the same time making the US a giant safe space and ignoring reality.

Space Requirements for Wind and solar. To generate the same amount of energy as a nuclear power plant a lot of space is needed for Wind and Solar.
Resources to Produce Batteries, Solar Panels and Wind mills. Battery production requires a fuck ton of water. With impeding Water shortages this is suboptimal.
How many Solar Panels and Wind mills can we produce daily? Not just construction and installation on site, but also mineral mining for the Solar panels. And then how many factories can produce these, and can that be scaled up? How many construction workers are there and how many on site installation can be completed.
We need 1200 wind turbines to replace an 30year old nuclear power plant. Windturbine = 3mW, Nuclear power plant = 1.2GW
Just to cover our current demand of electrical energy we need a ton of wind turbines and solar panels. Than add to that every other industry that needs to switch to electricity, Transportation, Chemical Industry, Steel Industry, heating etc. This would quintuple our electrical energy consumption.
The thing is,
While Nuclear is not cheap, it will be cheaper than the effects from un-softened climate change.
While Nuclear is difficult to maintain and if an accident happens it is bad, but the damage and affected area can be easily calculated.
While Nuclear waste storage costs money and has to be secure for a long time, the chance that we as humans will be able to recycle the nuclear waste in 200-500 years is fairly high. On the other hand once shit hits the fans with climate change shit really hits the fan but with the quantity of New York City's total sewage from the last 5 decades.
The thought that we will be able to recycle nuclear waste in 200+ years is more reliable than any promise Elon Musk has ever given.
4 years ago I quit smoking. While the first week was hell because of the nikotin withdrawal. Getting rid of the habit itself took longer. Waiting outiside, after a meal etc. it is all habit. What I did was buying a vape with nikotin free filling just to have something if my.mind craves the habit. This went on for 3 months reducing the amount I vaped linearly. By month 4 I stopped touching the vape and the only times I had a craving was while waiting for the bus with tons of smokers around. FYI location Berlin Germany.
But even this craving in such an environment stopped after a few more months.

Here in Berlin for example, in the first week of september my 85 year old grandparents received a booster shot invite letter from the Berlin senate. It said something like starting 20th september you can get the 3rd shot from any doctor or you can go without an appointment to a vaccination centre across the city.
what did they do? nothing because case numbers were low, I did push and push to finally get my grandpa to get is 3rd shot mid november while go to the doctor for something else... by coincident the rush to get the booster started 1 day after that.
I bet this happened a lot.... As far as I know just like for the 1st shot sverybody above 70 got that same letter. Meaning they had more than 2 months head start to get the boostershot.
So at least in Berlin I wont have sympathy anymore for taking away the shot from somebody else (got my appointment in january)

1 You get an invoice and transfer money before shipping 2 lastschrift - vendor pulls money directly from your bank 3 Invoice ( rechnungskauf) - you order, get the product together with an invoice and you got 14days or 30days to pay. 4 Klarna 5 PayPal 6 Credit Card
Amazon for example send me an invoice once a month for all the products I bought.
The Lastschrift 99 percent of the cases does not check authenticity, since banks are required to get you the money back in case of fraud, and since only German banks support Lastschrift, the vendor using lastschrift will be also using a German banks. This making unrecoverable fraud impossible.
And about option 3, package theft is no problem, since DHL FedEx ups, etc. All require a signature and are not allowed to leave the package on the door step. DHL brings the package to the post office or neighbour if your not home. Of course you can designated drop locations as well but they are not allowed to be in plain sight e.g. put it in the shed or something. Bigger problem is here that people use your name with a fake address for purchases, and after the vendor contacts the police they give them your address based on name. Don't know how often it happens but it is not on scale to be scared off.

Ehm, just so you every european country has such a system. Since you have to compare europe as whole to the US for size comparison. You can drive anywhere in europe through a system of highways and interstates. You can also fly to each city, but we still have a rail system.... That goes everywhere. You can drive from the northern most point in finland down south to the most southern point in italy. Same from west to east. You could even drive to moscow, china, korea and japan.

The mistake the EU did with the vaccine rollout is that it was talking to long instead buying. Otherwise something that needs to be taken into consideration is the following.
Right now we have a global pandemic so all countries world wide are affected. And unless the whole world is vaccinated we won't get past it since the chance that mutations occur that all possible immune against our vaccines increases the more people get infected.

USA, UK, EU, Russia and China.
From these 5 groups only the EU and China are exporting vaccines. I am unsure about russia. And the Chinese vaccine is also not that widespread outside China. But I know that the EU even supplies Canada and Mexico with vaccines, while the USA and the UK have export bans. That is one of the reasons why vaccinations are slow in the EU in addition to being slow last year with ordering.
So while they have great numbers at home concerning the amount of people vaccinated. It is morally debatable whether or not that is the correct approach for a global problem.
So if the vast majority of people survive, we should just let it rip?

Let's be conservative at say 20% ( since there is also an increase between ages 65 and 75+) that would be 140.000.000 Deaths Now for the age group below age 65 and acording to stats from 2016 are 16% of the world population obese . Obese people just like older people have a higher risk of dying from covid than healthy people. 16% from 7. billion ( deducted the above 65% since they already have a higher chance) That would be 1.120.000.000 people that would have a conservative risk to die of covid of 20% = 224.000.000
total death toll = 140.000.000 + 224.000.000 + 88.500.000 (5.9bil healthy people with death chance of 1.5%) = 450.000.000
By no means are these number accurate but they show about what kind of dimension we talk about when we talk about letting it rip. Important to not is that the 5.9 billion people are not all healthy so in reality that number would be much higher.

What kind of tests are available that can show if you're infectuous? That would be really helpful to tackle the situation. So far, I just know about tests that can detect the presence of the virus or antibodies.

I fail to understand how a 'foreigner' is a bigger threat (in terms of 'protection from a new outbreak') than the locals already carrying the virus and being responsible for all the recent cases (there is a staggering 22% positivity rate in Tokyo today - without these 'dangerous' foreigners).
To stop a pandemic you need to decrease mobility, to do that we had/have lockdowns. Some countries have closed their borders just like Japan (recently) and New Zealand. The Japanese Government has decided to conduct the Olympic games this Summer with only the Atheles and Trainers getting entry.
"Guests"/ Tourists would not be limited to the games but would like to go sightseeing etc. thereby increasing the amount of people moving around and creating additional / preventable clusters. I think the intend and purpose matters as well as who is affected - everyone is affected equaly vs a single group of people. BTW if for example Japan would ban all foreigners, because foreigners have a different hair colour, or because they look different in general. Then I would argue against that policy.

So if even you won't treat everyone as a possible threat, the chance that 'guests' bring in the virus is high. Since Japan is an island, most people will fly there by plane and most people will be inside the plane for at least 6 hours+. Even if at half capacity the chance that there is 1 infectious person/ person becoming infectious is high.
All Tests are snapshots of whether or not your infectious at time X.
Quick tests are only valid for 6 hours since they only check whether you are infectious.
PCR Tests are more accurate but take some time to get the results. Thus there is a chance to get infected afterwards and before the flight.
So all 'guests' would need to go into quarantine for 5 days just to make sure that there is no infection. Who is going to house them? Is it feasable to have large numbers of foreigners quarantined in Japan? Will they follow the rules? Will they were a mask? Looking at the news and the rule bending rule breaking that is happening in the west regarding the pandemic gives litte hope.
Furthermore, to protect your own country from a new outbreak is it really a wise decision to add another thousands of people into an already overcrowded city?
EDIT: Adding to that, since the whole world is not yet vaccinated mutations are a real threat, even in the US they found 2 new mutations in the past weeks. The later even seems to be immun to the vaccinations. Thus to not have to cancel the whole event and all 'guest' bookings one could also argue that the best way is to minimize the risk, chaos, loss. Now everyone can plan around the restrictions and further cancelations are less likely.
I think this is dangerous thinking, lies are bad but censorship is worse because someone has to decide what is a lie and what isn't, and that quickly becomes politicised.
Thing is first step would be to teach people again critical thinking and what the difference is between objective facts and opinions. Furthermore, something I am missing in this discussion and in general is that the concept of responsibility is lost. In the analog world we have libel laws and some limitations on speech ( incite violence, endanger others ). For example in Germany it is straight up illegal to deny the holocaust. We as a society have decided that this is the correct decision for that instance to ensure that it won't repeat itself in some form or another in the future.
Other 'speech' laws in germany make verbally insulting others fineable, because human dignity is the fundamental principle of the German constitution. Article 1, paragraph 1 reads: "Human dignity is inviolable. To respect and protect it is the duty of all state authority." Human dignity is thus mentioned even before the right to life.
Anyways what I am trying to say is that just as in chemistry actions will have reactions. Therefore, speech should have consequences. Ironically, republicans have preached over the years that everybody should be responsible for themselves and their actions, and not rely on others but when it is about consequences of speech they are silent.

in Germany, the Telco's gave up locking the phones in 2017. Because it was to expensive. I can not remember if it was a hard lock - as in any other sim card is blocked or just their additions to the OS. bought a phone in 2017/early 2018 - Xperia 10, where on the boot screen a Deutsche Telekom logo appears but otherwise the OS unaffected by vendor edits/additions. But updates are really slow since they go through Telekom instead of directly from sony which is already slow.
UK ain't all of Europe! Mainland European countries heavily subsidies infrastructure such as Internet, Electricity, etc. They even invest billions in the construction of new power lines, and fibre-optic lines. For the latter Germany alone is spending 100 Billion Euros.

Belgium tuition is ~1k per year, Netherlands its ~2k per year, Germany 0$, Austria 0$, Swiss ~1-2k, Spain <1k, Portugal <1k, Denmark,Sweden,Finland,Norway <1k. The UK is an outlier that tries to follow the american model of not investing into the future generations of a country. And thereby crippling a nation in the long run.
Finally, for a fair and sustainable market all businesses must abide by the same rules. Why do European companies pay taxes throughout europe on the profit they make in each countries to the respective country, but big American companies don't even pay 1%.....?
