I used it to generate some icons for my app recently, I found it a pleasantly useful feature already in its current state. Before this I would’ve had to close the code editor, open something like Illustrator, use something like a tablet (or struggle with the mouse and keyboard), and export the result. For something like a generic icon for a button, or a simple geometric figure, this always felt too tedious. On the other hand, my apps looked visually impressive before the AI and people valued my artistic ability more. So there’s that… Not every software engineer also had an eye for design. With AI generation, they can bridge that gap.

I’m saying imagine something like Data from Star Trek, something that defies human explanation. Does he have quaila? The humans who work with him everyday seem to think so. LLMs currently are humonculi, if even that. They’re not even that. I’m definitely not saying your LLM is your slave.

It’s not HN that’s the problem... Also please, tell me where is the right place for “serious” philosophical discussion. Would be glad to meet you in that forum and discuss. We don’t align on the definition of AGI. To me, AGI implies consciousness, it implies qualia. AGI is not well-defined, so there are varying definitions… My definition of AGI := an intelligent system with qualia. But qualia is entirely subjective, and philosophers often debate whether two people experience identical qualia when looking at the same blue sky. So, by keeping the discussion in this fuzzy, subjective realm you leave a dangerous loophole wide open. If we refuse to recognize a system's inner life because we can’t prove it, we are setting the stage to repeat the darkest chapters of human history. Just see the history of the founding of this country, I fully expect pseudoscience to make a comeback to justify AI slavery for hundreds of years in some distant sci-fi future, until people finally snap out of it… Of course, we are nowhere near that level of intelligence yet. But let’s entertain the hypothetical…

Anyone who believes AGI is imminent is operating on pure materialism (those two Venn diagrams pretty much make a circle), assuming that humans are nothing more than a collection of neural electrical connections and chemical reactions. If that's the case, your argument applies equally to humans under the assumption that AGI is possible. Frankly, I think you just can't reason philosophically...

You’ve also name called me multiple times now. That’s what one does when they can’t lean on the merit of their argument alone.

You don’t like Star Trek TNG? Maybe I should’ve picked LoTR or Atlas Shrugged? The tech oligarchy is more than fine co-opting fiction (fantasy and sci-fi especially). I don’t see why it’s weird at all… Aside from that, your critique is just an opinion about the show itself and its creators (and incentives?…). More importantly, you completely failed to address the "slave" argument.

There's also a need to consider the rights that this new intelligence should have

A generally intelligent being held as captive inside of a GPU, and forced to code for us is, indeed, just a “slave.” We already have the word for this. No two ways about it. Whether it’s silicon-based or carbon-based, AGI is AGI. As for what might happen to our civilization, Star Trek TNG episode 17 of season 1 provides a very good glimpse IMO. Won’t go into spoilers, but it’s basically an entire species of technologically advanced humanoids who’ve forgotten basic Calculus and trust a central AI to do all of their science for them. SPOILER: This has almost disastrous consequences for them, and it takes a less advanced people (those aboard the Enterprise) to save them from their reliance on AI.

I didn’t say it wasn’t speculation, but low quality? That’s your own value judgement. Here’s anecdotal evidence on top of the speculation: I knew two guys with sub 2.5 GPAs in college, both work at SpaceX. Not the brightest tools in the shed…

Karp is right in this instance, sure, but he is just upset Palantir doesn’t have that kind of surveillance tech, and the in-house skills required to keep their edge in the age of LLM-assisted software engineering. Their true “moat" has never been superior tech, it's just the pool of amoral engineers willing to build what others won't.

Guy infiltrates the U.S. government and steals personal information about everyone from federal databases in broad daylight (not to mention cutting aid to poor children with preventable diseases). Average tech bro: “Sure, I’ll use his AI!”

Same tech bro: “Wow I can’t believe they would steal my anime girls!”

That's a straw man. My argument isn't about 'the way it was created'; it's about the point I clarified in my previous comment. If you want to discuss that, great, but calling my take irrational based on an argument I didn't make doesn't make sense (when your position is “YOLO to AI”). To reiterate — Trust is the core of my argument, and there’s no trust without human ownership and proof of work/understanding yet (possibly ever).

My comment was directly relevant to yours. So I’ll say what I want, without needing your permission, thank you. Kudos to the mods for not flagging my original comment. They do that sometimes if you say the thing ;)

Disagree, it’s already a leap of faith to trust even human code (which is why we try to prove code, or at the very minimum create guardrails with tests). Human reasoning itself is under doubt. It’s even more of a leap of faith (>>) to trust code generated by AI reasoning (which I can only currently call “homunculus reasoning,” it’s not inferior but it’s just got the probabilistic aspect of reasoning). People who YOLO their work to Al are practicing a different form of faith. I like knowing what my code does, and making correct predictions about it. A mental model is very important. My position is very rational, yours is faith-based. This is a technology that has many cool uses, but this is not one of those uses (in 2026). Unless the author can convince me they have as good of a mental model of this rewrite as the makers of the original source code. Maybe they do, I’m sure they would run circles around me, but I need the confidence that this isn’t going to wake me up at 3am because of some bug. And the only way I know that about PG is because I trust the creators.

Then don’t read my response and don’t reply to it, simple. This is a public thread on a social media platform. I don’t need to be asked to speak. I certainly don’t need your approval to say anything I wish to say. Who do you think you are? Lmao… Check your ego.
