The disappointment is real when you tell the ransomware guy, "We're not paying. We just restored from backup."

Worked at a trucking company as a software dev and this exact thing happened. Got hit with ransomware attack but our IT team had daily backups of EVERYTHING. This was when ransomware was first "taking off" and they weren't even 100% sure if the attack was real.

I wish I got to see the ransomware's operator's reaction, but I honestly feel like they probably had enough people falling for it so I doubt they really got that upset.

It's REALLY easy to check what the browser is doing and multiple people have. There was an article floating around claiming it phones home but many people very quickly pointed out that the author was mistaken, at best (they thought some CSS or something completely normal being loaded in the background was brave "phoning home").

So is the argument from fallacy... If you want to argue against science then you should bring your own evidence because claiming that someone agreeing that their observations match 3rd party scientific observations is a fallacy is beyond silly.

I mean I'm not basing anything on personal anecdotes, I'm simply stating that my personal observation supports what a scientific study says. When there is evidence to back up an anecdote it ceases to be an anecdote.

And it's not like I'm making decisions based on my coworker's family members getting covid lol. This is a much more complex issue, and that really kind of reduces the entire thing to the point of absurdity.

Not surprising when all of the people around me who are vaccinated keep getting covid. My coworkers wife came down with appendicitis after getting the vaccine and her mom got covid after being vaccinated as well.. my boss's dad got covid after being vaccinated. I work in an office with 4 other people so it's not like there is a high chance of that happening, but it did.

Either the immunity wanes over time or people who are vaccinated are taking more risks or something

I like the concept but the desktop version makes me scroll horizontally to look through results. I'd rather scroll vertically on desktop, and come to think of it I'd probably prefer vertical on mobile. Scrolling sideways like that is really annoying.

Brave browser seems to have figured out a way to make money on ads without sacrificing user data/privacy. If you opt in to their ads they basically sync ad campaigns to your browser and then use local browsing profiles that don't get sent to any servers to decide which ads to show you. It all happens on your computer and it doesn't send your profile to anybody, so the only user data involved is "user looked at an ad, but we have no idea who actually looked at it".

I feel like having 2 separate sections for this would work pretty well. Recipes for making ingredients from scratch vs. recipe for a meal.

No, I have just met way too many fake activists who clearly only care so long as the only effort they have to put in is criticizing other people, while doing nothing in their personal lives to solve the problem.

You confuse equal opportunity with equal circumstances. All we can do is give people equal opportunity under law, so that nobody is restricted from opportunity from a legal perspective. Trying to solve the problem of equal circumstances will always result in the violation of human rights. We should do our best to give people the tools and education they need to succeed so that these other factors do not influence their life as much, and they can overcome the obstacles that they've been presented with.

I had someone hiring a web/app dev position and they had me make a 2D platformer game for a coding task... I still have no idea why.. It was some education startup trying to find someone to write socket code. They were really nice but by the end of it I wasn't super stoked on coding tasks.

Right, but if the article is correct then that dollar per gallon can't actually fix the problem, so you're just tossing money into a pile and being like, "look at how much I'm helping".

How about everyone just takes personal responsibility instead of pointing at someone who pollutes more? Because the big corporation you're pointing at can just point their finger at the next bigger problem and then nothing gets done.

The major issue is everyone wants to preach about climate change but nobody actually does much in their personal lives to help solve the problem.

For instance, I live in a fairly liberal area and a few of my friends bring up climate change from time to time, but they literally all drive gas-powered SUVs... I've jokingly brought it up with one of them and they basically said "I think we should focus on big corporations bc they pollute way more than 1 person"... I drive a tiny gas-powered car but I also don't ride around on my high horse talking about other ppl destroying the planet

I'm at the point where I don't really believe what people say when it comes to this kind of stuff, and judge people based on their actions, because it seems like just about everybody is willing to talk, but not many who are willing to walk. And I only say "judge" bc that's what people are asking me to do when they opine about how they think bad things are bad. USA is allies with Taiwan. If this is a China/Taiwan issue then it's a China/USA issue by definition. If China keeps being aggressive then the USA, and their allies, will be forced to respond to protect these innocent victims.

The old version of Microsoft Flight, that I spent like $100 on additional content for, stopped working because it relied on "Games for Windows Live" servers that Microsoft no longer runs. I spent about 5+ hours on different support calls trying to figure out a workaround, but to no avail.

The sad truth is that any company that uses DRM couldn't care less about you. They only care about money and they won't even push an update to remove DRM for a game they don't even sell anymore, so that people who paid money for the content can actually use said content.

Apple can eat a box of nails. They had my MacBook Pro listed as being supported for the latest OS, tried to install it and it fucked up my Macbook... Tried to reinstall Catalina but the the absolute latest OS I can get on it now is Mountain Lion... Because for some reason recovery mode says there are no OS packages or something.

I don't think I'll ever buy another MacBook based on that alone. Of course apple support won't/can't do anything for me bc they don't support it anymore..

They effectively are forcing me to buy a new macbook because I can't use ANYTHING on it anymore. Before I could use some things and Catalina had a lot more features but they really fucked me over here and I'm not happy about it. They literally tricked me into trying to update and now my macbook is useless..
