Interested in examples of the types of scripts others collaborators wouldn't be able to use? Like scripts for PR workflows?

I would ask for references for the suicide claims, so others can assess the impact themselves. That's a very serious claim to provide without any proof, especially to a group of people who very well be going through the same thing. I am not saying it did not happen, only it's the right thing to do.

Any other engineers just living life frozen at this point. I am unable to make any life decisions because it seems like I won't have a career in the near future. I am unable to purchase a home to settle down for my family, because dad might not have a job next week. I know I am fortunate to have a job, many don't, but fuck if this career isn't the worse thing ever for my overall health and happiness.

It's great, I'm in my 30's, two kids, relatively high income family, but can't make any financial decisions because it feels like on a dime we will be living paycheck to paycheck all while having zero debt. It's a stress I never thought I would have.

Feels like the most important thing we can do is document it all. Save multiple encrypted copies. There is so many things worth documenting, but don't let others tell 'you' what happened. Write it down.

Make sure to opt-out before handing your ID over to the agent. They will claim you can no longer opt-out at that point, even before scanning. I had one plead to my wife to go through, because they are being watched by management and it wouldn't look good.

This right here - I am migrating all of our GHA to use the mise action. Makes keeping the version of Go, linters, formatters etc. for the project so much easier. Haven't added the mise.lock yet, but on the list. Now getting my small team of devs to try using mise is much harder.

I would love to figure out why I don't see this at my company. People still shipping at the same rate as before, customers bringing up more and more bugs, problems that require planning for scale are not being thought about (more bugs), zero tests still being written. All the code I am seeing generated is like one shot garbage, with no context around our system or the codebase as a whole.

She says it's both. By new stuff, it's mostly one off programs that handle small changes to the way billing or claims are handled. It sounds like they have a library of programs to start with and she extends it to fit the new edge case.

My mother and her husband are COBOL devs for a US state government. She works on the health insurance side for teachers and other state employees. Think claim processing.

Lots of batch jobs running at night. Their alert system is an actual human who calls my mom when jobs fail in the middle of the night.

It's high paying for the city they live in, but not high paying for software development. They will both have full retirement and healthcare for life, assuming the government can fulfill it. They are both fully remote since COVID too.

She's also worked for state lottery, teacher's retirement system and DOT.

Just re-wrote an internal CLI to urfave from custom, but having issues with v3 autocomplete scripts. Might just take the time to switch over to cobra and use this.

from my experience of late, engineers usually toss stack traces into LLMs and ask what the issue is. good error wrapping, engineers grep for one of the first errors and get to the error code right away. both ways work.

Agreed. Using Claude Sonnet 3.5-7 with Aider produces significantly better output than any other models I have tried.

I would guess most people in leadership have no actual clue how they would replace the human in the seat with AI. They are riding the hype that the companies who provide the tools are putting out, but when it comes time to execute they don't have a plan. The steps between generated code to running in production is completely being ignored.

My company moved away from Level last year, but for the year we used the product, it was nothing but issues with approvals for purchases.

Consider valves or pressure regulators also! Lots of shared fundamentals with the flow of gases!

Oh interested in the issues with http clients you have? I think they are great to use for being right in the standard library. Only complaint I have is defaults for timeouts and such, but you make that mistake once and don't forget.

Related to the mastering your IDE, stop reaching for your mouse for every action. The devs that I view as the slowest in my org, it's always watching them drag the mouse around clicking for their next action. Scrolling a file tree looking for a file instead of fuzzy searching the name.

the first paragraph does not sound like bad news. It's sounds people had a better life.

I see the argument is that it didn't enable more extraction from human resources.

My step father and father died before I turned 15. I was an emotional train wreck, I never had a support system around me. I never had a chance to grieve in way to heal the pain. A tattoo was my attempt to heal. I also adapted work that my step father created and decided that would be my first.

My subsequent ones were in my travels, a replacement for souvenirs. I have tattoos from Antwerp, St. Louis, NYC and LA.

There is also a rush of adrenaline during the process and after that can be addicting.

If you have no interest, I highly recommend not getting one.

Yup, my expenditure has dropped around 700 kcal during my last cut. I am also down 24 lbs scale weight. But I needed to drop kcal from 2300 to 1800 over the 4 month period.

I actually bump my expenditure up around 200 kcal by adding a 3 mile walk each day just so I could eat more, but it's dropped back down even with the walking.

- Co-pilot for writing unit tests, renaming variables, asking for shell cmds

- gptscript for commit messages, MR comment ideas, etc.

- mods for piping a file and asking for recommendations, could do with gptscript too.

- Raycast for hotkeys to gpt-4 API or model running with Ollama

It's still super early, so I try different ways of using it every few months/weeks and keep around what works.

I am a mechanical engineer turned software engineer. Had a great job as a test engineer, hands on and wrote test software. I also made half of what I make now as a software engineer, with abysmal benefits. I am thankful for all the hands on skills I learned in those 3 years, but the software life is so much better for me personally.
