It's no longer a native app, it was rewritten in 2015 to be non-native. It's the same story everywhere, they're using Electron (or similar) so they can maintain one codebase for everything written in HTML/CSS/JS.

Literally Apple's HQ was $2 billion over budget. Private enterprise has these exact same problems. Government isn't any more or less incompetent than your average US business, unless you completely ignore how your average business operates.

It's the private sector completing these jobs, not government employees. Those jobs are routinely bid out to contractors, who complete the job with a profit margin.

It's both sides of the coin coupled with a relentless need to profit off everything possible at every opportunity.

Novo Nordisk (the maker of the newest insulin Levemir) spends about 17.8b kroner a year on R&D (or about 12.6% of their revenue). Levemir was introduced in 2005; they've long since made up any R&D costs. The first synthetic insulin (Humulin) is from 1978. These aren't new medications, even Lantus is over 20 years old. The R&D costs don't factor into the price they charge at this point.

You would see USENET posts back in the 90s about C/C++ vs ASM basically arguing that C/C++ was better than ASM because hand tuning ASM wasn't worth the man-months of effort required to extract the small amount of additional performance. It's basically the same argument, writing in a higher level language provides more benefit than the performance losses that aren't really that big to begin with.

If you file in small claims court, they might settle. Saying you're going to file doesn't work like that (because people say it all the time and very few people follow though). At most large companies, the script if you threaten legal action is to notate it in their file, refer them to the legal department and stop communication except through legal.

Long story short, don't threaten lawsuits. Just file the suit.

The A64FX has way worse performance per watt than an AMD EPYC and an A100. The A64FX's density per U is higher, so you can get a lot more cores in the same datacenter, even if the TFLOPS/watt is far worse.

For example, if you look at the TOP500, #1 (A64FX) gets about 14.78 TFLOP/watt, #5 (EPYC/A100) gets 27.37 TFLOP/watt. Most of the A100 based solutions are similar performance per watt. Nvidia is already beating ARM in power efficiency. This looks closer to the 3dfx acquisition from Nvidia's prospective.

It's already been here and Dell/HP is still an X86 shop. Intel will survive, they've been doing this for 50+ years. With far, far fiercer competition in the past.

Your average ARM processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon or Amazon Graviton, it's not going to win any performance awards. Even the M1 loses out to most Desktop processors once you start talking about multi-threaded performance. It's a great laptop part, proof that a BIG.little architecture is a good idea, and it's massively energy efficient, but it's not 'destroying' Intel parts on raw performance.

ETA: We hear this same rhetoric every time AMD would come out with a part that was better than Intel (Athlon, Ryzen, etc). Intel isn't going anywhere, give them 4-5 years and they'll optimize and sell a part the eliminates the advantages. They've been doing exactly that for 30+ years.

Scientific American is a publication, not someone's Facebook page. The writing gets Scientific American's legitimacy when they publish it and it reduces Scientific American's legitimacy if it's of poor quality. Editor-In-Chiefs should remember that 'it's an opinion piece' isn't a valid defense to separate the work from the publication or argue against a poor quality writing. They shouldn't publish the piece if the work doesn't represent the views of the publication or meet the quality of work expected.

I don't think that's really a problem you can solve regardless. A STUN server would make most NAT irrelevant anyway. Most firewalls are setup to allow established connections, so you just need to create an outbound connection to allow the inbound. You can basically use the same techniques as SIP/RTP when they do NAT traversal.

PCP is better than UPnP IGD, most importantly because it time limits the opening so port reuse is easier. I wouldn't use either in practice. I wouldn't suggest NAT-PMP either. I wouldn't use port forwarding if I could avoid it as well. I'd use destination NAT with a source IP range I knew in advance so it wouldn't show as easily in port scans. Someone is likely to tell me why that's a terrible idea, but it's my (current) preferred method.

It's disabled on all AT&T Residential Gateways and can't be enabled, you have to use port forwarding or put another router behind it using IP Passthrough. It's also disabled by default on EdgeRouters and can only be enabled in the ConfigTree or CLI. On UniFi it's disabled, but can be enabled in the GUI.

It's a convenience over control item. Most things do NAT traversal pretty well anyway, UPnP IGD has run it's course at this point. PCP is better in every way, push for that instead.

Most retail has pretty low margins because you would go out of business pretty quickly otherwise. It's pretty easy to setup a storefront and buy goods from a distributor, low barrier to entry means you can't charge high prices because it's easy to undercut you. Setting up a datacenter or building a competing OS is really difficult and expensive. High barrier to entry gives you high margins because it's difficult to undercut you.

Different person, but I have a kid. If your parental technique is 'surveillance', they're just going to go over to friend's house instead. It's like a micro-managing manager, it's going to be really ineffective and compliance is an illusion.

Setting the boundary of 'you can use Discord and only this channel I've setup for you and your friends' works if you've spent their whole life setting reasonable boundaries that you discuss with them. Just like an adult, reasonable boundaries are more likely to be complied with.

To the specifics, they could create a new account/server, but it's really obvious on the server list (set a unique server icon). Discord doesn't have parental controls (e.g., you can't set a settings PIN so the settings can't be changed), but there are a lot of server controls you can setup to restrict access (like really short invite times, for example).

These are already commonplace in the US. They're called Event Data Recorders. While they're technically optional, I'm not sure there's been a car sold in the last decade without one. If you get in a wreck it will record data about the cars speed, seatbelts, etc from the last moments before the crash. Otherwise, it's a ring buffer that isn't retained.

There are people genuinely exiting the workforce, however. Biggest of note is those over 65 that were previously working part or full time that have decided to rely solely on retirement income.[0] You have have a lot of exits due to childcare related issues.[1] The workforce has genuinely contracted during the pandemic.

ETA: Looking on the other side, there is likely some unknowable number of 16-18 year olds that are not entering the workforce yet, that would have pre-pandemic.
