I know how you feel man and I wish I could help you. Been talking with a former colleague of mine who blows most devs out of the water to apply to some jobs where he would be an amazing technical fit but it's hard to convince him to take the "humiliation".

There is another side to this than age. "Culture". A lot of people don't buy into the startup "culture" and won't be a good fit no matter how hard they work or how good they are.

I know people my age (30~) who can't get a foot in because they don't fit in with the hipster-frames-hoovering-art-director types who apart from being well connected founders also part time as diversity activists.

I doubt there is a shortage but if there was one I'd think it's simulated by non-coders hiring coders.

You can't call it a shortage when you expect developers to work 80 hour work weeks so you can squeeze $$ out of all your clients who decided not to hire in house for their main product on Android.

Nah I actually have no employment (no cultural fit anywhere) - so I am focusing on (or figuring out) building something that could generate income pretty quickly, though I understand the size of the income wouldn't be big, so I've cut all my costs down for me and my family to $20k annually.

Make a living basically? Can work on both ends, like cutting your costs. I wonder how much you would have to be living on annually in order to have a decent idea work? Is $20k too high?

I've been working on that more than my startup recently.

We could live on $20k annually for at least 4 years. Now I am trying to figure out a SaaS that could generate that within a couple of months. I don't mind fighting with price even though that's what you're not supposed to do.

Are there any CSS-frameworks that have been converted to JS but not are not their own components yet? It's easy to find React-Bootstrap but that comes with ready made components, I am looking for styling that's purely in JS so I can make my own components.

Also would a route-component be considered logic or presentation, or maybe it is its own thing and they forgot to mention it?

It's close to impossible to get a remote job by the sheer amount of people wanting them. And no place will let you negotiate less salary for a job. :-/

I find myself as the same place as the the dev who wrote this. I don't even need a "dev-salary", we could live on the 44k a month and I would be happy with that as long as it's remote. Could go less, but it has to be a job that exists in ~5 years.

The poorer ones never make it, the one who needs your help abroad. Sweden spends more money on hostels in Sweden than they donate to Syria. In fact, they have started to take the money they were supposed to donate to Syria and pay them out here instead to "entrepreneurs" and in welfare (since it's expensive to live in Sweden)

I agree with you. "Photoshop-designers" can only export their PSDs and that's it.

I can actually build and design it. If the design isn't satisfactory, I can.... wait for it.. actually iterate on it.

In fact, if I had another engineer instead of a photoshop-monkey we could iterate twice as fast on either device or browser.
