Oopsie. This strikes me as perhaps one of the growing pains of not-quite-self-driving: common sense would dictate that manual control would be taken by the driver when approaching an unusual situation like a roadside incident, but we just can't trust the common sense of a minority of people.

Tesla perhaps isn't being loud enough about how autopilot isn't self-driving, and shouldn't even be relied upon to hit the brakes when something is in front of you.

This was a great read, and very impressive. I hope to one day be as comfortable with these kind of tools to just be able to say "oh let's have a quick look with the decompiler in a VM". The author just exudes competence.

Anecdotally, I can certainly relate strongly to the quotes you pointed out.

This note is perhaps conflating hardware with software. It sounds like a reasonable solution to me for each university or school to have some small server hardware running free software that supports their online needs.

The 'free' I believe is like the Spanish 'libre', not like 'gratis'. Put another way, it's free as in 'freedom', not free as in 'beer'.

Schools seem so fundamental to creating the fabric of society, to me. To have a school system under the contractual obligations of a company, whos common primary incentive is wholly financial, seems like a good way to weaken the mechanisms that produce a good, happy society.

Free software does indeed seem like a good thing to require in our society-cornerstone systems: schools, hospitals, government systems etc.

Not sure if it's related, but consistently the best engineering managers I encounter are those that do not want to be managers.

The nice thing is that the increasing levels of public-awareness / call-out culture would mitigate this. All it would need is one guy on twitter to create a stir to bring opposing points into the mind of the appointed, to which the technocrats would need to have a good rebuttal or be overruled by the appointed.

I'd like to expore the idea some more, seems really interesting.
