Why should the US be allowed to punish the native of another nation like this? I don't understand it, Australia should be trying him. We aren't respecting the "jury of their peers" thing we Americans love so much. I remember a similar incident in the news recently as well, some British kid I think.

I think society is ready for it. The technology will prove itself over time, but people will adopt it quickly if given the opportunity. I wonder how many cars they would need to test this on to see if it made driving safer. That would be the ultimate test for it, because if it makes driving safer, it's worth the few bugs that it will have. Also, they should mandate that all of the cars have a manual override that still works in case the computer crashes or detects a hazard that it can't handle.

I have to think he meant it in a different way, but it's still something I believe to be true. The laws regarding IP and copyright are obviously broken. I hope the record labels are missing out on enough money to go bankrupt, they've certainly worn out their good will and outgrown their usefulness in this digital world.

I don't feel bad about what's happening to GoDaddy. They've profited handsomely from the internet community as a whole over the years as arguably the most popular registrar. They deserve to fail as a company for their support of SOPA.

All you need to do to figure out the hash for a password is take the MD5 hash of it. My guess is the commenter you replied to just took some common passwords and some no-brainers and did a quick little "find all" for each hash.

Going from the hashes to the passwords requires brute forcing, dictionary attacks, that sort of thing.

A number of companies are running into those parallel computing issues again, as we're starting to see more cores added to new CPUs instead of large increases in clock speed like we saw in the late 90's. Plus there are larger distributed computation systems out there like the Amazon and Google clouds.

Would it be possible to define the KG as the amount of copper wire, when arranged in a configuration (a coil?), that causes a magnetic field of a certain size when a specified current is applied?
