I don't know what you people are talking about. I'm just glad I always browse with Javascript turned off. If you didn't see the writing on the wall and permanently turn Javascript off around 2006, you have no right to complain about anything.

I haven't been the target audience of technology for a long time.

So many people dismiss Tcl as near garbage, but Tcl/Tk applications written more than 20 years ago still run as intended including GUI, and they run on Linux, Windows and Mac. You just install a new --or old, whatever-- version of Tcl/Tk and the scripts will run, agnostically. I have a few I made myself 15 to 20 years ago and at least with those I never have to worry about distro upgrades, repositories or libc version.

Good news: you don't need music theory and I don't even recommend it. Bad news: it takes a lot of work to make one song. A lot.

I suggest you download Caustic for Windows (free, also runs on Linux with Wine) or Android ($10 I think): https://singlecellsoftware.com/

And just fiddle with it. You will get the hang of it. But you will see that building up an entire song takes a lot of time and effort.

Caustic is not good enough for serious business. You should aim for a DAW with plugins. But Caustic can be a very good start for someone who knows nothing. Some DAWs are easier than others. Tracktion Waveform has a very capable free version. Mulab also has a free version but with limitations.

The story people are commenting here is about a "tracker" type of DAW. I find those horribly difficult to use. I suggest you avoid them.

I tested Windows 11 recently and I was really shocked. Apparently, it has two basic themes: my-eyeballs-hurt white and what-is-the-point-of-living black.

Not aliens, I can assure you. Any genuinely intelligent and advanced civilization would go out of their way NOT to be detected by anyone.

That is probably what I hate the most about today's technology.

Listen here, kid. Two and a half decades ago I had Windows 95 and I could browse the Web, send and receive email (or fax!), play music, play videos (or movies), play games, use instant messaging, program in multiple languages, use databases, run a mail or Web server on my desktop, read and edit documents in formats such as doc, rtf, xls, ppt, pdf, xml, desktop publishing, view and edit images including high re photos, including porn of course, make international phone calls, and a few other things.

And every single Tcl/Tk script (cli or gui) I wrote two decades ago still run 100% unchanged.

If you refrain from using anything just because it was "compiled a decade ago" then you are a fool. Sadly, you are not alone. Far from it.

The issue is so simple. The companies claim that it would impose heavy costs on them. Well. So it either costs the companies or it costs the consumer. But the consumer is exercising their free choice while the companies are ignoring said choice and forcing them to pay for something they don't want. That's textbook extortion.

Easy solution: impose crippling fines or maybe a little prison sentence here and there for extortion. Why not? That's what it is. Do it and watch how fast the mobsters, I mean, the companies will change their tune.

Brave new world. I can't wait for the AI toilet, the AI toothbrush and the AI Pez dispenser.

People aren't forced, they choose it. They are clueless about technology and don't trust anything that may look like a dark horse. They want reassurance. It's not just the "enterprise" or corporate world. Home users have that mentality. Mac computers cost an arm and a leg and people still pay for it because the advertising machine has hammered it into the heads that "it just works." Most people only trust big brands. The bigger the better.

What a joke. Web standards move under our feet -- and browsers break -- all the time. I personally work for a company that forces me to work online and only pretends to support Linux. They say I have to use the latest version of Chrome (so I can't choose a browser that won't spy on me), I use it and it still breaks occasionally. I know they count on everybody using Windows and don't want to bother with Linux. So much for cross-platform. That pipe dream was proven false years ago.

I have run high quality music production software on Linux. It was Windows software, that runs thanks to Wine. It works and it's even better than native applications because native applications expire when a distro version is discontinued and the application is not packaged for the current version. Windows applications installed in Wine never expire. Wine is Linux, Linux does the job.

And high quality image editing is possible, though it's probably done differently from whatever you're used to. There are plenty of graphic artists making their work on Linux and bragging about it.

So "doesn't even remotely come close" is either a lie or a display of your ignorance.

Arch has excellent documentation. It definitely stands out.

No, they don't bring any social commentary, they only bring sycophancy. As soon as you criticize it you are moderated and silenced into oblivion. Your "social commentary" can only go in the way they demand that it go.

The Web analogy is good to remind us that advertising has become some kind of war on the population. I remember when ads were relegated to the sides and corners of any Web page. Now they are inserted in between the paragraphs of what you're reading, some of them blink and there are also pop-ups. Some have an "x" to let you close them, but they come back just seconds later. More and more sites now will show you nothing at all if you disable ads or Javascript or even cookies. People use ad blockers because they don't want to see the ads, so it's reasonable to assume that they are not going to buy anything or if they do it's not abusive advertising that will determine their shopping decisions. But that doesn't seem to matter at all. You just have to look at the damn ad. Just look at the damn ad. Look at the ad or we will send an assassin over to your house! VIEW THE AD, DAMN IT! It's just insane.

They were dangerous too. Huge and bright moving ads on the side of high speed highways. I don't know if any accident was ever caused by them, but they were really begging for it.

But you see, people are all apologetic because they are afraid of criticizing. The truth of the matter is that tagging, graffiti, murals or whatever you want to call these abominations are made by very poor youngsters who could have access to real art if they wanted (museums, libraries, internet), but they don't because they are brought up in a ghetto culture that basically forbids them from even getting interested in traditional art. And a lot of people cower when they criticize it (or never criticize it at all) because criticizing that garbage is considered politically incorrect. So that so-called "art" is only tolerated thanks to fear of reprisal and should be labeled "fascist art" because that's what it is.

Neither murals nor graffiti is art. None of those would have been accepted in any gallery some 30~40 years ago when standards were higher and the world didn't suffer from the high number of grown-up men who are hooked up on comic books and animated cartoons it suffers through today. A lot of it is just vandalism. None of it seems to be made by or for adults. 99% looks like it's made by some comic book fan on LSD. Always the same. Always the same. Always the same. Always the same. Always the same. That's just how shallow they are. I've heard stories of places being pressured or even threatened to cede their spaces to accommodate this form of "art." It's awful all around. Real art is deep, meaningful, timeless and doesn't need to be imposed.

I have a bigger beef with other Fuck You patterns.

1. The increasingly high number of sites that will show a blank page when I disable Javascript.

Tcl dicts do something very similar, and Tcl is very well integrated with SQLite.
