I also don't have any need for realtime transcoding as my home internet upstream speed is sufficient that I can watch 'full resolution' stuff remotely from my laptop or phone via VPN back to home office, and smbfs or sshfs access to the same file shares, without needing to use any CPU or GPU resources to process the video in realtime in between where it's stored any my client playback device.

And if your remote internet connection is insufficient? Especially if you have all content in high bit rate HDR stuff… that can be problematic in some parts of the world.

It is likely to be 1.1 speeds, and considering that USB-B connectors are chunky and dying out it is likely going to be cheaper to go for USB-C.

USB 2.0 is a superset of 1.1 spec and considered inclusive of 1.1 speeds. I said 2.0 speeds specifically because Type C does not even recognize “USB 1.1” as a speed, and when you go to 3.0+ you start to put other constraints on routing and most importantly requirements on the cable (it needs to be emarked if it supports super speed).

Sure, but your power input should be a USB-C. No reason to use the clunky USB-B for that. Labeling as Power In and leaving a regular USB A for the output seems fine to me. Given that most older keyboards use USB-B for their input, A is a perfectly fine solution and solves the “input vs output”.

I’m glad that worked for you. That doesn’t work for everyone, and there’s plenty of people with completely healthy weights who eat healthy as well who just have outrageous cholesterol. Any medical interventions that fix genetic conditions seem like a win for me. Even fixing lifestyle issues medically (eg GLP-1s) seem like a win for me.

As I started this thread Nothing doesn't include a jack on their phones because they want to sell you a 300$ pair of Bluetooth headphones that I can guarantee are inferior to my 70$ Fiio headphones.

Nobody is forcing you to buy their most expensive headphones. Also, the cheapest Bluetooth earbuds that Nothing offers are literally $25. I don’t get your point here. They’re offering a range of competitive headphones and you’re free to choose other brands. There’s also nothing forcing you to buy the same brand of headphones or earbuds.

Airpods , which are above and beyond the most popular Bluetooth buds don't have user replaceable batteries. You have to ask Apple to do so at 50$.

I said over ear headphones. Pretty much all of those have user serviceable (without destroying the device) batteries. Even the AirPods Max you can do it.

And for true wireless earbuds, form factor makes that difficult. Nonetheless, there exist earbuds that do actually have user serviceable batteries. I’ve personally replaced a pair of batteries in Sony WF-1000XM3s. At a cost of $10… hardly a lot for the original price of these things.

There's literally no benefit to the end user.

The benefit to the end user is lower cost, fewer parts that can break, more area for other components, and potentially improved form factors from not having to have a 3.5mm cutout. Maybe all of those don’t immediately translate to tangible benefits from consumers, but there’s quite a few phone form factors that have existed that would not be possible with 3.5mm jacks.

If your USB c port stops working your phone can't be charged anymore and is useless.

Pretty much all phones have wireless charging in some form now. That’s your backup, or potentially primary if you’re in the wireless charging ecosystem. Also, most phones have a method of repairing/replacing the USB-C port. Not convenient of course, but this is no different than damaging a phone from yanking the charging cable or whatever.

I have more Bluetooth earbuds then I can count. At 30$ a pair they almost always go bad within 6 months. My wired headphones work for years.

Then… don’t buy cheap products? I’ve never had a battery go bad in over ear Bluetooth headphones, and even if they did I’m pretty confident a replacement set of batteries would be widely available. I’ve replaced parts on extremely old Bose headphones without an issue.

Sorry that occurs with you. I know some people are much more sensitive to it than others. Also, lower quality or older ANC products have a much stronger “head pressure” effect which is definitely undesirable. Modern high end stuff from Apple, Sony, or Bose basically have all eliminated that effect in my experience.

I’m not sure what your vendetta here is against phones without jacks. There’s so, so, so many decent USB to 3.5mm jacks that are nearly free these days. Same with ones that also offer pass through charging.

The fact is today Bluetooth headphones are 99% of the market for phone users, and for the rest of folks the dongle is a perfectly suitable solution. In fact, dongles are a way to offer superior performance to most phone 3.5mm jacks. If you really care about the audio performance of your headphones, most phones offered mediocre or even outright bad audio quality out of their headphone jacks.

On long international flights a traditional headphone jack beats Bluetooth every time.

Current gen over ear ANC headphones have battery life in excess of any international flight. Most in excess of a round trip, even. True wireless ones don’t, but that’s not typically what you use on a plane. If you’re using the in flight infotainment, you’re corded anyways… so it’s a bit of a moot point. I can’t possibly imagine flying without ANC headphones at this point though, which requires a battery. The cable is also such a pain on a long flight. Any time you get up or move around, it’s inevitable you have to relocate or move the cable around to prevent it from getting snagged. If I could have Bluetooth on every infotainment system I’d love that.

I'm not sure why your being argumentive here, it's a known fact that Bluetooth has to compress everything down and sacrifices quality to do so.

My point is that although that’s technically true, it’s practically not true. The quality is sufficient that you’ll hardly notice for most environments. If you’re in some listening room, sure fine. Use your fancy wired headphones.

In public, with environmental noise, etc or especially on planes? The picture is a lot muddier.

Realistically, most USB devices hiccup when they exceed their current limit, especially in 5V mode. And since caps don’t loose charge that quickly typically, you can usually charge the cap up enough to deal with this transient no matter how big your cap is (unless it’s something absolutely enormous… which wouldn’t be implemented for cost reasons)

Less impressive than you might think here. I can't imagine how small this model must be if it only has 1.46M cells. Maybe 1M? Probably less. Sure the token/s decode is cool, but this size isn't capable of doing anything. For context: this is a 45nm process.

In comparison, Taalas' implementation (which everyone likes to talk about) is in 6nm, is 815mm^2, and only serves a 8B parameter ~4-bit quant model.

So, 815mm^2 in 6nm is roughly equivalent to ~6112mm^2 in 45nm. If we assume everything scales exactly the same, 4mm^2 would be ~1500x smaller. 1500x smaller means at best we're talking about a ~5M parameter model. I don't know how you'd get a 5M param model (with multiple bits) in 1.46M transistors.

The advantage of Lightning here is there is a totally open port, so picking lint out of the port is substantially easier. With Type C you have to work around the 'tab' and it requires much much smaller tools.

Either your standards are much higher than mine or you haven’t been exposed to current gen Bluetooth gear. Decent picks sound perfectly fine even in the sub $100 category. Anker, Nothing, or even Sony have some decent stuff in that price range.

And basically all current gen ANC headphones still offer wired options as well, including Bose. But they still come with wireless if you’d opt to use it. My comment was in reference to the ANC “clamping on your head” which is sort of irrelevant to wired vs wireless.

Also, a significant advantage to wireless when using ANC is you don’t have to deal with cable noise. Especially in a quiet office environment, noise from the cable moving around on your body gets amplified and you can hear it.

Or just… don’t buy ones that have noise canceling? Not that hard and often cheaper. Again I’m comparing $20 headphones here. Nobody is saying $100 wired headphones aren’t gonna be better than $100 wireless ones for sound. But, if you want ANC for planes or something then you are going to be using wireless headphones anyways.

What do you mean by this? AAC or SBC is perfectly fine for $20 headphones. Definitely for that quality of headphone. LDAC or Apt-X are pointless for a headphone in that price bracket.

Have you looked at the price of actually mediocre Bluetooth headphones recently? They’re like… $20 for a distinct fine set of true wireless headphones, including the case, even from a real brand. Certainly comparable to $20 wired headphones.

I’d agree there’s no single right answer, but I think generally a risk profile for an insurance product that is so outsized against you seems like a poor decision.

This isn’t like putting all your money in meme stocks or something, this is more akin to selling risky stock options. The downside potential is massive and essentially uncapped, whereas the upside potential is meager.

Total loss being the bar seems crazy to me. A 20-50k unexpected expense for almost everyone would essentially result in bankruptcy or at minimum insolvency and long term debt.

That means you would need to hold enough money in short term accessible money (HYSA, etc) to self insure in that scenario, which is unachievable for most people.

Insurance should set a maximum cap to your pain no matter the circumstances… and I think the pain being >50k is quite unreasonable unless we’re talking about property that is worth in the millions.

What do you consider catastrophic loss? I’ve found in home insurance the delta on lower deductibles isn’t that meaningful and when something happens, the pay out is almost always worth it. Something like water damage from a burst pipe can be 20-50k very quickly, and having to pay a 10k deductible is quite a big hit in addition to the remediation needed.

I see it a little different. I'm not saying I prioritize work over everything else, I just see them as almost unrelated. The location is a filter, not a motivation. For various reasons, I wouldn't ever choose certain cities to live in and there's very few reasons a job would overcome that (I guess if you gave me enough money that would make me reconsider... but it's a pretty high bar that is likely unreasonable).

This is obvious for most people... generally a bad financial idea to move to a new city without a job. But, primarily taking a job just to move to a new city seems odd to me. I guess I just prioritize a job I want to work at over a city I live in.

Annoyingly the input pins had a constant DC offset of over 2 volts, which went away when shorted to ground but reappeared moments after I removed the short.

Mic inputs on audio codecs always have DC bias, because they are DC biasing the microphone inputs so that signals can pass. By default, you would expect ~2-2.7V of DC bias on each microphone channel. This is typically connected through a high impedance (~1kOhm) source impedance. The actual impedance of the input should be extremely high resistance, though, typically in excess of 50kOhm.

The proper way to connect this would have been to a line-in jack on your motherboard. There should be no DC bias on those jacks. Or use an audio input that is 'retaskable' to select the line-in function instead of the mic-in function.

This large of capacitance is not easily available as C0G. The usual X7R MLCC capacitors are piezoelectric and will change voltage when bumped, which can add interference to audio. Electrolytic caps are an option, but will not fit well on pads meant for 0402 ceramics.

C0Gs are not needed for passing something like this. X5R/X7Rs are commonly what is used for DC blocking capacitors in ADC/DAC solutions and you can still keep extremely good audio performance even with the theoretical microphonic problems for Type 2 dielectric capacitors.

If we wanted to improve audio filtering, we could design a replacement PCB (four-layer for impedance matching and signal integrity?) with footprints and traces to install a second-order Sallen-Key filter. This would be about the same difficulty as the HDMI2SCART, but likely reusing the existing case and screws unlike the HDMI2SCART's 3D-printed case.

Why not just add your filtering circuit externally via the 3.5mm jack? No limits to what you could do. Cascade as much as you want at that point. Might be a bit ugly, but it wouldn't require re-designing the board.

You’re not replacing the outsourcing it component though, you’re replacing a maid at home doing it for you. In home laundry services are a very different experience since you don’t have to also go pick up and drop off the laundry.

A service like that can be hundreds a month, so pay off period is on the order of years… which could be worth it.

Is there a reason head gestures couldn't be mapped to functions in Linux? I see little reason why you couldn't have it used to play/pause or something. Heart rate monitoring less-so... but even that exposure could be useful for something if given the right API.

I think you’ve got things quite backwards if you think that the desire to run models on device or use any of the variety of open weight models (big or small) on premise is somehow bowing down to tech billionaires. Quite the opposite really.

Once again, my statement is that the Taalas product is not a fair comparison because it runs an old outdated model. If you want to run a similar model at similar speeds (albeit not serially, but in parallel) you don’t need their product.
