A person's career choice does tell you something about them, but it's far from the most important thing. I don't think it's valuable as a sole indicator of what sort of person they are or how well you'd get along with them.

As to social status: if someone is willing to befriend another when they have one sort of job but wouldn't be willing to befriend the same person if they had a different sort of job, I think that someone is cheating themselves.

Security people don't care about usability.

I spent a long time working in the network security field, and you speak truth. The perverse thing about it is that security people should care a lot about usability. If the scheme isn't usable enough, people will figure out how to bypass it or aspects of it.

The technically weaker security scheme that everybody accepts is more secure than the technically stronger security scheme that everybody tries to bypass.

"Passkey" refers to a very specific authentication method. TOTP, etc., don't count.

I'm old enough to remember when radio was king, but if that's what a good DJ does, then I suppose I've never heard a good DJ. Personally, I preferred the DJ who talked as little as possible and had good taste and variety in the music they chose to play.

But yes, we are poorer for their passing. They've been gone for a very long time, but I've still yet to see anything that can adequately replace them.

That several dozen new companies came out of it has nothing to do with whether or not it was a bubble. It was, and the effects of it popping were bad (including the effect that its popping led to consolidation). Nobody should want a repeat of that.

Which requires money to do. If you borrow that money to enable using solar to make furniture, then you can repay that money with interest and keep a profit for yourself. Both the borrower and lender come out with more money than they had when they started.

Stylish?? That phone is unusually ugly to my eyes. I'd put up with having a hideous-looking phone if it were really a dumbphone, but from the description, it sounds like this is like every other "dumb" phone I've seen on the market: it's really smart phone under the hood. Not what I want.

This is why I have shifted to buying old, used things rather than new ones whenever possible. New stuff is, in the vast majority of instances, garbage regardless of the price point or how respectable the brand had been in the past.

To find the better product, you'll have to rely on others who've tested it and can tell you how it holds up to time.

Even this has become inadequate. The product others have used for long enough for them to tell how well it adds up is likely to have been cheapened and made worse in the time that has passed since they bought it.

Certainly not all of them. Several AI data centers in my state have been built near small communities where water is scarce. Those communities believed the companies building them about how the water impact would be limited and wouldn't result in a serious impact.

That has turned out not to be the case. The water usage of these centers has been terrible and is increasing, and the cost of trying to find and develop alternate water sources (this means trucking water in) is being placed squarely on the shoulders of the community -- and these are small towns without a great deal of financial resources.
