Something I’ve asked in the past: “what is the one thing that the person hired into this role, if they did that, at the end of the year you’d say that was a great hire” seems to always catch people off guard and I’ve gotten answers that were almost wildly out of scope for the job responsibilities. When that happens it’s interesting to see their response when you point that out. Also huge red flag means the person interviewing you had no idea what they’re interviewing you for or everyone has a different idea what this role does. I ask this to everyone at every round.
I’m not a lawyer but the way I always understood it was that this license agreements are not really valid as contracts because a contract is something all parties agree to and can amend. Consumers can’t amend these terms therefor while they may limit liability they not valid contracts. Is that not true?
Line numbers are the dividing lines between columns. If you have 2 columns you’ll have 3 lines: |a||b| the two lines in the middle actually count as 1. Hence 3 lines. So 1/3 is not a fraction its column span. It means “start at line 1 and end at line 3”.
Call me cynical but it’s a shell game as far as I can see: same product but new name, probably cheaper parts, more expensive so more profit per unit…except they won’t sell as many units, but on paper it will look good so the market will reward them. I can’t tell though if investors and analysts are too stupid to see it this way or maybe they don’t care either? I guess it’s better to not care because you make money so instead of calling it out when you see it, just give it pass and everyone makes more money. I know Google isn’t the only company that does this it’s just a sad commentary on tech and the market that it works.

Basically this seems to be saying that this is a no-go at the moment and possibly forever. We’re going to need innovation on top of innovation on top of innovation to make this work…if it can be done at scale. To me though I think we’re looking at the wrong problem. Why scale the technology up? Could we just build smaller facilities…like a lot of them that serve as local hubs that cultivate and grow for an area? You know…like a farm? Go to your local “farm” to get the meat. If the hump is scale…stop scaling get smaller.

So I started playing with Godot in early 2020 and remembered reading an article on ECS and why they don’t do it. I just found it again and they say this pattern has been around in the game industry since the 2010s feels like 1) it’s good Godot doesn’t implement this, just to not deal with any potential Unity BS 2)this patent would fail if you’ve got deep enough pockets and time. Oy. This article is silly. In March of 2020 when schools started to close we did not know the full impact of COVID. decisions were made with the best knowledge AT THE TIME. Also we still don’t know the full impact of COVID. This article has a sample size of 1 year. As a parent of 3 with a child who started Kindergarten in September and did the entire year virtually—I’d rather deal with the fallout of having to “catch her up” than the fallout of her being asymptomatic and potentially killing me, my wife, one of her brothers or her teacher. I feel like that would be greater harm. We made/make decisions in real time with limited information—I regret none of my decisions with my kids schooling.
As a full stack developer who works on tons of PHP and Laravel projects…I don’t care. It’s the 3rd thing I install on every new machine: Firefox, Homebrew, then latest version of PHP. This will have an effect on developers who create tools that rely on PHP but I’m not sure how big of a market that I’m really is so ok.
No. Ut I’d tell a designer that’s a stupid design and we can get pretty close to it if they really wanted it but overflows will make it look ugly depending on where they want this magic unlimited tab box.
Funny story: I went to An Event Apart in NYC years ago (I think they’ve only had 1 in NYC) and I’m enamored by the people around me and Eric Meyer grabs the seat next to me while Zeldman is on stage and he’s quietly kind of heckling him (like a friend would not in a bad or mean way…and he couldn’t hear it). I’m sitting there, next to a person I very much admired, like Troy meeting LeVar Burton in Community trying to no freak out. It’s hard not to understate the impact Meyer, Zeldman, and A List Apart had on general front end development.
I feel like we are about a year away from a twitch pivot that could change this. Honestly, they are probably the only company that could compete.
Here’s my question: will they also deprioritize videos they feel won’t earn them as much money? How will we know if they do? If you have 10 small channels of nearly equal content, but 1 has slightly better videos that get slightly more views…doesn’t this now incentivize YouTube to show that channel more?
No. ADHD does not work this way for me, or people like me who are inattentive . This article is the equivalent of the time my primary care physician said, “just use a calendar”. You want me to maintain a set of documents? Buddy, without meds I can’t remember to brush my fucking teeth. I’m not exaggerating. ADHD is a spectrum, articles like this paint everyone with the same brush, which furthers many people to feel like complete failures.
One problem here: line height should be unit-less. Use just a number and that number will become a multiple of the font value so font-size 2rem line-height:1.3 don’t use units

It’s not ego driven but there was anger on my side. I hate it when we blame technology first, which seems to be the point of this article. Kids can absolutely be addicted to phones that’s true. But it’s the job of the parent to set limits, this person admits in the article that her daughter wore her down and flaunted the limits and there were no consequences. So yeah she may be addicted now, which we can’t really diagnose, but that’s still the parents fault for setting limits and bending to the will of their kid.
1 I’m sorry about your attempted suicide and I hope you’re ok now. 2 We are not that strict, my kids have limits but they are known and they know what happens if they break the rules. But you are right there is a balance and this parent seems to not be balanced at all and they’re blaming the phone. She said her daughter wore her down and she caved and allowed her TikTok—I’m sorry but as a parent that is on her. Limits do need to grow and change as the kid gets older but unfettered access to everything at 11 is not the phones fault.
Its the job of the parent to set limits.
What a load of shit. I’m sorry I have an 11 year old who has an iPod touch the real problem here is lax parenting. My son cannot use his phone alone in his room alone, he doesn’t have TikTok or any social media apps. He cannot take it to school (not that there’s a school to go to at the moment) or take it out of the house unless he asks first and 95% of the time we don’t let him. Kids test—that’s like an iron law of childhood. It’s your job as a parent to set boundaries. Set the rules and set the consequences and then FOLLOW THROUGH on the consequences. This is the equivalent of lazy parents in the 80s blaming “death metal” for their children’s problems, or lazy parents in the 90s blaming video games, or 2000s parents blaming the internet. It’s you—all these problems are your fault.
I love these articles because the writers are so earnest and seem to be oblivious to the fact that buyers do not care.
My wife has sung in choir for years there’s zero social distancing in them. You normally stand shoulder to shoulder while practicing and there’s normally a person less than a foot behind you so, to me, spreading like this makes perfect sense.

Hmm. I’m on iOS 13 and I just clicked a picture in a message and my screen looks slightly different. I see more options and I can tell from the design there is more. What I can’t tell is if I’m the edge case or his wife is, but for all the iOS 13 hating people enjoy doing, I’m not convinced this is a real issue.
