Quitting to start a tech company is much easier when you have had 3 years of banking $250k per year. It reduces the risk and stress of possibly eating ramen daily. Also investors love when entrepreneurs are willing to invest some of their own money into a concept.
More people on HN, in my opinion, would quit today if they had enough money in a war chest to survive for year or more.
As Apple the hardware company continues to invest in their software ecosystem and begins to count on non-hardware revenue the threat from Google increases. I believe that Apple has proven that they are playing the long game while enjoying successes of the short game. Given what apple has done with just iTunes alone shows they are easily looking out 10 years and beyond.
I don't think it's fear. In the battle of who's ecosystem a consumer will select for their desktop/laptop/mobile/web/music/video experience, snagging these patents could serve as a very nice speed-bump for Google. Every consumer who buys an iPhone or iPad over an Android device, is one more consumer that is more likely to commit to Apples ecosystem of software and services over Google's.
That was my plan too with the hope that I could do something similar to this and load/write my own apps. I actually received my lunatik kit with a ipod nano 6g about two weeks ago.

This watch is a better fit for what i want to do now - get up and running now with a programmable wrist based terminal.
I love the design of the lunatik but until the nano 6g is jailbroken I'm just wearing a nano on my wrist. The novelty of which has worn off since I can't hack it to do anything special.
Depending on the missions this may get you on the real "watch list". Right now taking pictures of rail, buildings, monuments, etc can get you flagged by the DHS. I'm going to keep my spy activities in the virtual world.
Yes the only category that is shared between the iPad and the Asus ep121 is the tablet form factor.
Its like comparing a desktop replacement laptop and a feather weight netbook. Both share the form factor but they are for different uses.
The features of the ep121 put it in that "desktop replacement" arena where power and flexibility are more important than light weight, instant on, etc.
I am excited about picking one of these up and doing more than playing angry birds. I'll keep the iPad (for the record I own and carry an iPad daily) for play time, convenience and for looking cool. I'll use a powerful windows 7 tablet for getting hard core work done in a small package.
So what does this say then for all the free ad-supported mobile apps? I keep reading more and more of the success of ad-supported apps that would also face the same risks.
I do think however the flaw here is the writer informed users that clicking supports him - simple click fraud.
I agree there is little understanding by some of how Adsense "works" and how $ from an advertiser ends up in a check to you from Google. Most people don't care however anyone running a business off of Adsense should know in detail how they work or you risk getting your business cut off like this. As others have said diversification of revenue is important especially if you don't have confidence in how the system works - example the stock market.
If you are releasing one or a few videos, revenue from Adsense is just about the only game in town. However if you have enough content that can survive outside of YouTube you create an opportunity to work directly with advertisers. Many video podcasters have moved this way, not hosting videos on Youtube and owning the ad relationships and revenue.
Someone should give the PR Team at Facebook a big fat bonus for making this happen for 2010.
This supports that investors invest in the founders and not the idea. This isn't the most compelling application/idea however the founders made an impression and that got them a slot.
Regardless of how big Facebook gets. If users continue to blindly accept the terms of use when they sign up, they will continue to agree to this type of censorship. FB is a private site that you elect to join and you accept their rules by doing so. The public at large should be outraged but nobody cares.

I've got a similar setup using SSH Tunnel Manager to tunnel to a co-located Linux machine running squid proxy. All my applications used the proxy connection via the tunnel (browsers, IM clients, etc.).
Took some initial configuration time to get things setup but now its just one click in the SSH Tunnel Manager widget to get things going anytime I'm working remote.
VPN may be easier but an SSH tunnel gets it done.
