I thought the article did a fairly good job pointing out:

- The only applications anyone is implementing on progcoins are exchanges and/or gambling. So far, dApps are a circular argument.

- Smart contracts aren't so smart. They are ticking time bombs waiting to get exploited DAO-style.

That doesn't leave a whole lot of room for utility.

It's sort of weird to have watched the target demographic switch from college kids to everyone's older aunts and uncles. We went from "you should know better than to post that picture" to "you should know better than to engage with that order of operations question".

Because we can only wager hazy guesses as to what it means to experience. If a line is to be drawn, than it must be drawn in seemingly inconsistent and arbitrary ways.

There is a mimosa in a garden near me that will close its leaves when you touch it. Is it experiencing the sensation of touch?

(Edit: mimosa pudica, sometimes also called the shameful plant on account of how tenderly it seems to fold itself)

Maybe. I'm not sure how you'd measure the benefit otherwise though. If you're going to compare apples to oranges (or deer road collisions to wolf predation of livestock), dollars is one of the ways you can.

you don't need an SDK to do this

Does the code for cross-checking who holds what NFT on what platform just materialize out of whole cloth? Does Eth not have an SDK?

and there is no need to have an agreed between both companies

Yeah, you would. The IP rights don't get thrown out just because there exists a pointer in a ledger that says you paid money to do widgety things with the content on someone's platform.

Distributed computing ... when there's a code complexity resource you need to optimize for

That's not fun. That's work. From TFA:

Remember: The DAO — first of its kind, from which all present DAOs take their name — failed so badly it required a fork of the Ethereum blockchain.

You don't want to be stuck holding the bag on something like that.

You don't need an integration at all: you just call the other company smart contract to see if the user has a specific type of equipment defined by an NFT.

Uh, yeah... that's integration!

We can glue it back and use other mechanisms but it won't be exactly the same

It will be harder to snap next time since wood glue bonds are usually stronger than the wood itself.

It's not a hotline for free therapy, and they only have the script/training for one circumstance. You don't blame your hammer if it doesn't saw very well.

black turtleneck (very specific maker)

Pretty sure that's Issey Miyaki.

They are the results of deliberate application and prioritization of optimizations -- evaluated by his personal criteria only, of course. You might think I'm kidding, but I am not.

I believe you 100%. None of those words is synonymous with "good taste".

In other words, he won so hard on proving the existence of bad taste that he's not allowed to play anymore.

This is a "pit boss asking you to leave the table for winning too much" moment.

rich tech folks writing about areas way outside of their expertise

Even if you were right, the majority of canonical art history comes down to how rich people are spending their money.

My theory is that people don’t believe good taste exists because most people have bad taste

This breaks down pretty quickly outside of fine art criticism. If I put 20 people in a room and only one of them has dressed "in good taste", they'll stick out badly enough that the consensus of the group will be that the one is in "bad taste".

The problem is that "taste" is vague, depends on ephemeral context and may be subject to popular whims and ignorance.

I felt like the real point of Nathaniel's dithering article was pointed out early:

reducing file sizes in a stylized way.

I don't think we ever stop and actually consider what creative avenues are open to us in that regard.

It's sort of like how there are technically better methods of printing than risograph, but sometimes that's what you really want and it's still fun to mess with.
