Maybe the site needs a quick explainer of what Elo ranking is. Perhaps people should have to pass a multiple choice question about it before they can start ranking.
Conflating Elo ranking with goodness is shockingly dimwitted - I'd think it much below Hacker News commentators, but apparently that's not the case. Of course Hitler would have a high Elo ranking; he's objectively one of the most powerful and influential humans of all time.

HackerNews, I love you, but some of the comments in here are detached from reality. You'd be hard pressed to find any social media company that gets more traffic from desktop than mobile in the year 2023. This site is the exception, not the rule.
You're not there to make the world a better place, to belong to a family, to improve anything. Just do your job and go back to your life at the end of the day.
Speak for yourself. I do want to make the world a better place and I'm fortunate enough to have a job where I do that. It's rewarding; my life has purpose during working hours.

San Francisco has become a city of one-party rule, which simply does not work. It never will. When a political party's power goes unchecked, it always becomes corrupt, incompetent, or both. This is universal and irrespective of ostensible ideology.
The FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (second link) contains statistics from 2019. However, it seems to be the most recent edition. I have no idea if or where the 2020-2022 ones exist.
If someome could point me to them or explain why they don't exist, I'd appreciate it.
America is a land of extremes. We actually have relatively high standard of living thanks to extremely high wages, which allow us to live lives of relative luxury. We also have high wealth inequality and tolerate many horrors - some unfathomable to other developed countries (e.g. gun deaths).
Violent crime as a whole is extremely low.

That strikes me as a cherry-picked statistic. San Francisco is one of the most crime-ridden cities in America.

I cannot recall the last time I've seen such a bipartisan push for something so monumental. Just within the past week, Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Mark Warner (D-VA) have been saying virtually the same thing: TikTok is an unprecedented national security threat.
Of all the areas Silicon Valley has disrupted, it's profoundly frustrating that political lobbying isn't one of them. I'm not aware of any startups even attempting it.
If they redact all identifying information, it would most likely be legally Kosher. However, there is an extreme abundance of caution in the healthcare industry regarding everything surrounding HIPAA. Merely questioning the legality of something can cost millions of dollars in lawyers' fees. Therefore even miniscule chances of something being legally challenged (e.g. plugging patient information into an LLM) would most likely be deemed too risky. And frankly, hospital administrators will not want to risk their careers over trying out what they perceive to be a glorified chatbot.
Tl;dr: When it comes to HIPAA, risk aversion is the name of the game.
I'm sorry that this is happening to your son, OP. I think your solutions are:
(1) buy him an iPhone or
(2) stand up to the bullying in some capacity.
Not to grandstand, but this is one of the many reasons why I strongly believe children - certainly preteens - should not have phones. They obviously cannot comprehend the function of these devices, and certainly cannot comprehend the danger of these devices. Tragically, at this point, it would take a law to change the status quo, and it seems the the gerontocracy of American government cannot comprehend or is apathetic to the underrated crisis of mental health that mobile phones, social media, etc. is obviously causing amongst children.
I'm sorry that your kid is a victim of this unprecedented modern phenomenon. After this debacle is hopefully resolved, encourage you to share his experience and your thoughts with a lawmaker if you see fit.

I haven't heard of physical growth hormones per se, but it's definitely true of the psychological equivalent that is Adderall and related methamphetamine prescriptions for ADHD or "ADHD." It does wonders for getting kids to sit down and study, but at who-knows-what cost.

I wouldn't be surprised if the employee who did this gets fired as a result of this. In fact, I'd be shocked if @paulg isn't reinstated within 48 hours (as they did with Taylor Lorenz a few hours ago.) All of Musk's previous interactions with Graham suggests that their relationship is friendly. And if there's one thing we've seen from Elon Musk's Twitter, it's that he's not hesitant to fire Twitter employees.

This is insane. Elon Musk himself [replied to @paulg](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1604258004706201602) not even 24 hours ago. I bet this will be reversed (quite possibly along with the new anti-competitive, anti-free speech policy) but if not, this feels like an unprecedented death knell.
