You would think, but My 2019 MacBook can barely run an older xcode that doesn't emulate newer phones / tablets.

Some of these responses to my above post are a bit haughty. I'm just reporting from the trenches that the Apple tax is real, not everyone can afford to keep paying up, and a 20% cost increase is huge.

As an app developer, having to eat an ever increasing Mac hardware cost upfront may push people like me to just focus on Android.

I don't think there is much overlap between people capable of building cutting edge LLM's and the people who want to build a cutting edge LLM for the government.

Who will make them the next set of weights?

If a government can just seize the product of someone else's labour, either they will end up as slave owners or without willing workers.

Even if AI is the next combustion engine, would you bet the farm on a C tier buggy whip manufacturer like Oracle being the next Ford or General Motors?

Google's AI is hamstrung by a culture of safetyisim, by that I mean going beyond what we can all recognise as safe limits to protect the user from imaginary ephemeral things like cultural harms.

So maximal safety at all costs is in itself a cost. They can spend billions on AI but that spend is down the toilet if the user bounces because the AI's persona is a relentless politically correct scold.

I'm sure every business can pull out an area and say: this is profitable. It's a classic hide the losses a shell game.

They cannot grow indefinitely when they make a loss on every user. More growth = bigger losses.

Current investors should be left holding this shit bag, better them than retirement funds.

These numbers show that OpenAI is boned. They have no path to profitability and if they raise prices or cut services they will strangle their golden goose.

They could have existed indefinitely as a service layer that was reliant on other companies feeling charitable, like Firefox, but they also wanted to get rich.

It seems reasonable to assume that for some group of intellects they are not smart enough to know how not smart they are. There is no definite boundary where this effect is either on or off, therefore there are probably some gradations to this awareness as you climb up the intelligence ladder.

Another way of putting it: if dumb people had more insight they would cease to be dumb.

The Dunning Kruger effect suggests that the people who caused the pain are also those least likely to feel it.

I set Fable onto a couple of intermittent bugs in my React Native app that Opus had failed to solve. It came up with novel approaches for both that squashed the bugs further up the pipeline, killing baby Hitler before he could become problem. Then Fable came up with 3 more edge case bugs, and 4 code cleanups.

This matches my experience with other model quality leaps, it's greater understanding gives it more bug blasting firepower.

Perhaps setting a new model off on a 2-4 hour tasks and expecting perfect results just isn't a great test. Chunking the problem is always a better test of abilities.

There are other groups: scouts, football, dance, crafts, etc. Actually doing stuff in the world does not require a phone. Kids learn by doing stuff.

In general around this topic, there is a lot of post hoc rationalisation about choices already made. I've actually got a family member approaching her 30s who has spent the last 2 decades mostly staring at a screen, and has nothing to show for it. So for me the choice is easy, maybe less so for my kids.

I was navigating a big city and the surrounding countryside at the age of 12 before the internet was a thing. Apps and phones are not necessary for exploration.
