If you want to learn a lot about startups and feel like meeting with a lot you could distribute it in multiple $20k-$30k bets in up and coming startups you believe in. If you aim at landing cash in 20-30 startups with that cash many of them will go to $0, some will be a break even or moderate success, and 1 or 2 might be a likely winner of the entire strategy. Angel investing isn't for everyone and also there are many better ways to see a "more guaranteed" return on investment but little as interesting as getting a front row seat to the future. If you are purely after risk adjusted returns then just make sure you are allocating to beat inflation, mitigate hyper inflation and into something you know or want to know a lot about. Many great investors out there to learn from but if you want the "starter" guide Angel by Jason Calacanis is a pretty decent book to read.

Great writing. This should replace the syllabus for very many Comp Sci / Soft Eng "Intro to Compilers/Interpreters" courses as many do not come close to this level of detail.

That is if every company that is in the chain follows those strict data protection laws. It wouldn't be the first time that bad actors exploited legally protected browsing.

I share this feeling. Going to python for the first time as someone that has developed software for 16+ years was incredibly more difficult and time consuming than I would have hoped. I still don't understand how it has become the default go to language for teaching new coders when it has quite unintuitive syntax / packages and setup steps.

Get into a startup where a lot of these practices/ideas aren't yet fully ingrained/adhered to and grow with your team. This will also let you learn more skills than "just coding" as you will have to wear multiple hats.

Once you are confident you can move on to bigger engineering shops. Or just stay and have a great time building new things in startup world. :)

Once you know the basic strategy/naive algorithm behind winning it becomes easy to get to much higher than 2048.

There will only be a few times that you have to stop this process to get "unstuck".

This mentality is what drives people to mediocrity. Not reaching your full potential just hurts yourself, your family and your community in the long run. If you have the capability to learn more, earn more and create great businesses don't sit on the sidelines the world needs more action takers.

Noone uses desktop PCs? I don't know what type of hipster country you live in but they are certainly still used heavily. The product that really hit both of them out of the park was the Razer Blade Pro. This should instantly stand out to you as being a bad idea.

This happens to more startups than you can imagine. I have been severely stolen from and defrauded of shares by a startup in North Carolina. They did it to several employees and investors and remain impossible to gain contact with even while appearing on podcasts with people like Randi Zuckerberg. Getting walled out of a business even with lawyers looking over documentation due to lies and deceit is a sickening feeling.

While I agree with this sentiment if they are doing all of the post processing and data operations in band and not off in separate queues then the architecture was wrong to begin with. Collect data => add to queue => process later. It doesn't matter how long that process later step takes as people only care about being able to submit their census and their government not looking like a laughing stock.

This exercise is about performance not things like security clearances.

The requirements of the census should be obvious to anyone using it. Not the requirements of some suits sitting around blowing money because they can't think of scalable ways to host a web form. The system has one main purpose and that is data collection. A concise list of requirements could be:

- Scalable to the entire population of Australia (not less than 1 million submissions per hour)

- Significant attempts to combat expected DDoS attacks (the original census site decided not to take the offered help from upstream DDoS protection services)

- Data Security needs to be paramount (seems like the one thing they did right as nothing has been leaked yet)

- Just because it is a government contract doesn't mean the cost is irrelevant. [$9.8m + (testing costs exceeding .5m and .5m of OFFICE plants)]

These students achieved this in a caffeine filled weekend hackathon for around $500 and it achieves at least my first point as they benchmarked it at 4mil req/h. Bantering on about how it isn't an adequate solution just isn't productive here. The purpose was to show that it can be done better and cheaper than what IBM and the Australian Government came up with in FIVE years vs 2 students in 24ish hours.
