Not trying to be a troll but the thing that jumped out at me was the P/E listed for P&G and my mind immediately compared it to the FB P/E at the IPO.

Both H (Bill Hewlett) and P (Dave Packard) were at Stanford prior to WW2. And Silicon Valley pre-dates the Internet era. See Fairchild Semiconductor, The Treacherous Eight, etc.

If I have 1000Mbits to send then gigE is 10 times faster. But in the article we are transferring only 2k across the network. Mixing latency and bandwidth here. The latency to send 2k across an empty network isn't 10 times greater on a fastE versus gigE network, right?

This may be ignorant and please correct if I am off base but given the same physical medium isn't sending 2k across the network the same cost whether you are at fastE or gigE? Given the network is not saturated?

I have used FreeBSD since 2.2. I used to laugh at the slashdot trolls saying BSD is dying but I really think it is dying. The commercial support is just not there.

This doesn't seem so shady when you realize that there are also these things called "liabilities" that you need to account for. It should be fine to count the whole cost as revenue as long as you are also accounting for the expense on the other side.

To your second point - it is entirely possible that people are traveling abroad to get medical care that was developed here but not yet approved for the general public. That doesn't contradict their original point. I think they more than just hint that the problem is regulatory. The fact that investing in medtech has a late exit time period speaks to the regulatory hurdles and they point that out in the article.

Seriously, that book is a must read for any person that reads this site. 3 dollars for a used copy. And Apple did not license anything GUI related from Xerox - there was a lawsuit involving the lack of licensing the technology.

You know what rubs me the wrong way? I am a geek - I love it when the geeks get the credit for making things work and the marketing people just get the credit for the shiny veneer. Woz is the geek here and I feel like he doesnt get the credit he deserves. Anybody know where Woz worked before Apple? HP - he took the risk of leaving a well established company and joined forces with Steve Jobs. I am not saying it didn't work out well for him but I think too many people forget about him and focus on the other Steve. Oh well. Oh yeah, I wrote this on my iPad and it took forever to compose. Is there really any shame in linux not "owning" the desktop? I try to use Ubuntu, I really do, but almost every day I fire up vmplayer.

Can we really not differentiate between the two? TV, on its own, is a one way medium. Social media is interactive and allows two way communication. This is going to get some people up in arms but it is a realistic knee jerk reaction to think about shutting down social media when your populace is organizing mayhem using these networks. Even if shutting down the networks is an exercise in futility.
