Two changes made a big difference for me in using Windows 10:

1. Turning off Cortana using these instructions: https://www.howtogeek.com/265027/how-to-disable-cortana-in-w...

2. Turning off most of the visual effects under "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows." (I left "Smooth edges of screen fonts" and "Enable Peek" checked)

The combination of these two change feels like a whole new computer.

If GTK had the same status in Linux distributions as the Win16/Win32/etc API does in Windows then Linux distributions would carry every API-incompatible version of the library necessary (and maintain old ones).

As it stands, GTK more closely resembles the "Microsoft C++ Redistributable" situation in Windows -- an awkward hybrid of library and API.

Older LaTeX articles used postscript as their output format instead of PDF. These conversions look bad on screen for some technical reason; it'll probably still look good printed, though.

"Mathematics is a part of physics."

Oh? I suppose making this assertion is the same as proving it.

"The ugly building, built by undereducated mathematicians who were exhausted by their inferiority complex and who were unable to make themselves familiar with physics, reminds one of the rigorous axiomatic theory of odd numbers."

How vile.

Did you read the article?

Holding pedagogical standards constant, more people were able to graduate due to the ASAP program. The implication is that many of the students who currently fail at community colleges do not do so because they are incapable, but because they need guidance and structure.

Community colleges are the way out for folks who fall off the path early.

What path? Is a four year college the expected path?

The problems described mostly reflect the demographics that they serve.

I'm uncertain what you are trying to say. Do the problems of a certain demographic not matter? Is the ASAP program mistaken for helping the wrong demographic graduate?

but if you look for an excuse you'll always find one

Then why does the program described in the article work?

It is what you make of it. I know it sounds silly, but I haven't found one situation in my life that I couldn't influence or over come if I worked hard enough.

It does sound silly -- and the program described in the article undermines this idea in general. Or were you just bragging?

I don't understand your comment. The entire article is about why "relying on intuition and physical experience" just wasn't good enough -- how the difficulties inherent in 19th-century style mathematics forced mathematicians to evolve towards a modern modern style.

Algebra and number theory are both heavily reliant on modern mathematical thinking. Abstract algebra is practically the defining example of it.

How does one create Mathematica and Maple without modern mathematical thinking? Indeed, formal logic is rather closely involved in computing generally.

How does a precollege mathematics system that is based on a 19th century style of mathematics pay more attention to 19th century style mathematics?

I find your confident dismissal of modern mathematics to be vexing and oddly misaimed.
