I'm not well versed on developments in blockchain tech. Could someone here help explain whether this is good news and which specific problems, if any, would this technology help solve. For example, could this be applied to provide secure online voting systems? I like that proof of work protocols are inherently safe as long as majority computing power is 'good'. Could such decentralized security technologies replace the currently centralized ones completely, for example, certificate authorities? Please pardon my ignorance, I'm eager to learn.

I think people here will appreciate the following information. To understand fat production, I recommend everyone research the way a liver metabolizes sugar, and its connection to fiber - it is most important. Long story short, the liver metabolizes excess sugar into fat cells when there is not enough fiber. Presence of fiber allows excess sugar to be broken down into waste which leaves the body, avoiding production of fat cells. In essence, this is why eating a bag of apples is healthy while eating just the sugar from the same amount of apples is not. Consuming adequate amounts of fiber is key to healthy sugar consumption. If you noticed, fat people tend to not eat much fiber. The smaller the ratio of fiber to sugar the fatter you are. Simply focusing on increasing fiber consumption leads to much better health because you naturally begin to consume more vegetables and fruits which also have the nutrients. Additionally, and this is perhaps the most understated health fact. The importance of pH balance. The body depends and thrives when the environment is alkaline, and dies when it's acidic. Although acidic foods are also healthy, it's important to eat more alkaline foods than acidic. And the pH is determine only after the body digests the food. This is why for example lemons are actually one of the most alkaline foods. Obviously government should not be allowed such power. Simply because it cannot be trusted. Everyone knows it will use this backdoor against everyone without limit. And everyone knows the lengths to which the US will go to spy on their people and everyone else. The fact that this request is being made is further evidence of the government's intentional malevolence. This behavior should not come as a surprise anymore. I mean any reasonable person by now knows what to expect from US government.

It's good to see this happen. In this day and age i think all of us and especially scientists should be more morally conscious about the ethical implications of their work and not sell themselves when their research and tech are financed by war money or when their work becomes intellectual property of companies that deal in war. If you could redesign a system of government free from major flaws we see today, how would it work? Current systems almost seem to have a tendency to "breed" the types of malevolent, inefficient, greedy and problematic power structures we see. I think that at the root of the problem are natural human flaws. It seems almost certain that given enough time, no matter how well intentioned people are, the cumulative effect of our natural flaws inevitably evolves the kind of system/culture that attracts and perpetuates these flawed tendencies. I think the process could be compared to natural selection. Has anyone thought about it like that? I'm curious. Is it possible to design a system of government which would not be influenced by inherent human flaws? A system which, by design, has a tendency to "select" characteristics that shape it to be more beneficial, free from its current flaws?

It's not surprising at all that this is the case. The mainstream media is not directly responsible for these decisions, it is in fact controlled by the powers that be to not report against the establishment. Blaming the media is missleading, it suggests they are responsible, when actually they are held on a tight leash. Many non mainstream sources however do report on these issues but obviously their influence is tiny in comparison.

I agree, this would be an effective and efficient solution. Also I think introductory, and eventually upper year courses could be taught more interactively and autonomously. A human teacher isn't actually required for most material. I think a new paradigm in teaching methods for CS will naturally emerge. I'm thinking of an interactive learning tutorial and practice guide that's comprehensive enough to out perform the best human teachers.

I think we're due for a paradigm change in consuming and recycling products. Just as there are manufacturing costs, there should be disassembly costs associated with products that are part of the price. These costs will cover the process of compete disassembly of the product into its constituent materials at the end of its life cycle.

Breaking up Google because its influence on the internet is largest? Absurd. Reasoning like a doomsday prophet is silly. So is jumping to solutions without understanding the problem. The problem is potential for abuse of power. But, so far no indications of such behavior were found, indeed the opposite is true, Google is quite respectable. Accusing them with this in mind seems malicious and raises the real question - why would someone do that? The reason of course is that Google quality is hard to complete with which prompts many shady parties to resort dirty tactics. This isn't about equality for all, it's about reducing Google's competitive advantage. Coca cola is the most valuable brand, and it's nearly impossible for new beverage companies to complete. Surely you would not think that restricting coke's areas of operation, breaking it up, or making it reveal its secret recipe is justifiable. Yet, this is precisely what France is advocating.

I understand that with so much market share Google has a bigger responsibility to practice good ethics. Which it seems to be doing. No? I'm sure if Google were to actually begin going astray, people would notice websites disappearing. Until clear evidence of this is found, it is unfair to scrutinize them to reveal their competative advantage. In fact doing so suggests malice more than anything. Sure Google may have the power to 'remove' content from the internet, but since when is that justification for accusations of malicious intent? If France was truly benevolent and actually concerned with improving Google equality, threatening a lawsuit is an odd way to address the problem. A good course of action would be to raise the issue with Google in a trustworthy way. Yes, in general, given enough power corruption emerges, but I'm not sure it applies in this case. Power could be wielded without corruption. Large market share does not imply corruption. Perhaps what is ought to be done by Google is to somehow address the issue of transparency without compromising their algorithm. I may be wrong but I feel confident that Google isn't corrupt. However, the people behind this legislation certainly appear to be up to something.

If France doesn't want its citizens to use Google search, then be straight up and admit that. Why are they playing games and penalizing Google? After all, the people of France prefer it and indeed choose to use it.l, no doubt because it's good at etsy it does. Why on earth would Google reveal its algorithm, it's a vital competative advantage. And why is it illegal for search to be biased. If it's bad then people won't use it. If France wants its citizens to avoid Google, instead of crying about it, it ought to advertise a better solution, or in the extreme case, pass a law barring people from using it. Not all lawyers and politicians are bad, but a lot seem detached from reality and cause serious problems as result of their ignorance.

Toronto, Canada. I worked as a dev in a fairly big software company which made B2B software. There was a dev who would literally do nothing for half the time. Their productivity was extremely low. They would only work enough to appear to management that they are busy, but ultimately had the rest of the department pick up their slack. Of course, management didn't have a clue about what competent dev work ought to look like and were themselves incompetent, like most management is. This person worked at the company for years before being let go. I think this problem stems from management not being able to relate to the work. I worked at a web dev firm which would contract me out to a partner company to design websites. I would literally have no boss, or anyone tell me what to do. Try as I might, I couldn't get clear-cut work assigned to me from management, who were not devs and thus could not relate. There was poor organization. I would waste time worrying that I'm not being productive. I hated the experience for all those reasons. My girlfriend works at a hospital and tells me about coworkers who work for 10% of the day. They have been working there for over a decade. A lot of people are hard working, but most are not. I think given the opportunity, most would slack off, this is inherent human nature.

I think its about time everyone seriously considered learning this lesson from Germany and improved their work ethic. It's amazing that a culture could be so generally efficient. Compare that with typical work culture elsewhere - grossly inefficient. We all know this to be true. I worked in a few places and witnessed how half-assed things could get. It's frustrating and pathetic to see coworkers stream tv shows for hours, read books, take naps, go out for coffee 5 times a day, and ultimately accomplish nothing while making 70k+. This is most prevalent in large organizations with big bureaucratic structures. I would welcome this change. Focusing on task, eliminating distractions, having greater accountability, being straight-up, and getting to the point are all wonderful ideas which should be emphasized and practiced. A lot of workplaces are great, but a lot still are poor.

Incredible. It is exciting to see which areas of life AI will optimize in the future. The medical company which is focusing on teaching AI to interpret patient charts and etc, is an excellent example. I wonder if it would be possible to build a deep AI for interpreting law, effectively replacing research work which lawyers do. It seems law has a methodical structure that AI could learn to navigate recognizing past precedents, performing wide cross referencing, exploiting existing loop holes in the system, and validating judicial decisions.
