Totally shocked that a community full of Aspies is having a hard time mustering sympathy for this girl and instead have to pedantically inform the Internet that that's not really programming and what's the big deal anyway I did this when I was 12 in between stimming sessions and telling my parents every species of dinosaur.

Charles Symoni (sp, I know) used to float the Intentional Programming team around on his yacht for weeks at a time. I think it was mainly to increase productivity though.
One of the more useful things I've seen on HN. However it seems to only really apply to B2B. There is a bit of a hand wave about B2C at the end. Would love to see more thoughts about its applicability there.

What do you do when your fleet gets big enough that you start getting throttled?

Good. Suck it. This company is pure slime. I pity their acquirees. And it's totally worth my karma hit to just get this off my chest.
Nice accomplishment but I have to say that the idea of the product is off-putting. Still I guess it's up to people if they want to advertise this way.
I'm not convinced that this approach will always yield a higher viral coefficient than not forcing sharing in order to gain access. The interesting thing is you could actually run A/B tests on this.

This guy is seriously misunderstanding the long tail. First of all the long tail is an opportunity, not something that "dies" (his words). It's an opportunity for authors because what authors have today is the opportunity to self publish and instantly receive global distribution and in the case of say Amazon sit on a store shelf that has millions of visitors a day. On top of that, they take 70% of the books retail price.
So all this and he's going to cry about the price point dropping?
For the record my book buying rate has probably gone up 10x since Kindle, partly due to price partly due to convenience.

An AWS instance is simply an OS running on a virtualf (xen?) machine. On the largest instances you may in fact be the only virtual machine on the physical hardware.
Why would you feel more comfortable running a single instance outside of AWS? Your safety is just an illusion. Your MTTR is out the window. When you go down, youll have an outage that goes like this: "we'll be back in a day or two when I order new hardware and drive it to the colo. Also, the database will be time warping to the last backuP 24 hours ago."
Running on a single machine is never safe and AWS is cheap enough and comes with enough tools (ELB, RDS, maybe EBS) to allow you to become truly redundant and single fault tolerant.

It seems like such a no brainer for a political movement/party to run on a platform of restoring Americas manufacturing base.
I think people forget how many second order jobs are lost with the withered manufacturing base. Transportation, IT, HR, restaurants that people eat at on lunch breaks... I can't even enumerate how many second order jobs large scale manufacturing creates...
I regularly go out of my way to pay for American made stuff, so I can say I put my money where my mouth is. Same with shopping locally - farmers markets with local producers etc.
I don't know when well ever snap out of this way of life --- spend less to have more and the quality of life around you declines. Personally I wish my kid had less toys but they're so cheap that grandma and grandpa ship em by the boxful.
Ugh.
Not just a way to run a business, but a way to live life. Might not work for everyone, just as the opposite of whatever this strategy is may not work for everyone.
