I'll give you a good reason, healthcare costs. You think all that life saving medical care after an overdose is free or cheap? It's the same reason why motorcycle helmets are required by the government in many states. The public doesn't want to pay for the un/under-insured comatose rider's prolonged stay in the hospital after an accident.
This reminds me of the generation that were kids during the Great Depression. The trauma of food scarcity & poverty often resulted in extreme forms of frugality that lasted for the rest of their lives. It wouldn't surprise me if this author also saves/reuses food plastic wrap, scraps of aluminum foil & rinsed out plastic sandwich bags as my own grandmother did.

Google Sheets lets you download the workbook as an Excel file which can be automatically saved to a Google Drive folder. Hourly (?), daily, weekly, monthly snapshots of a shared workbook can all be easily scripted and stored for later retrieval. It eliminates any confusion over which is the latest workbook because the Sheets version is always the most up-to-date.
Had TOH offered the Generation Next apprenticeships 20+ years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to spend a few months working alongside these master craftsmen. A LOT of the forest that burned in the CA Camp fire isn't going to come back. Thanks to warming winters, the pine bark beetles are making their way up the Sierras and laying waste to entire mountains of pine trees. The folks who want to live in the burned out areas will now likely be surrounded by chaparral instead of pine forest.
Indeed. The minimum skill required to find long-term employment becomes a much higher standard. Entry-level office jobs are going to vanish before most people realize. Many low level processes that are currently done by clerks/bookkeepers/analysts will be replaced by scripts.

Having worked at charter schools... I can tell you that each state runs their charter program a little differently, but generally teachers at charter schools are not union represented. Each school charter is issued independently of any others and the school design can vary dramatically from one charter to the next, which is actually the point. Some charter schools have long days. Some go year round. Some focus on at-risk youth. Some focus on alternative pedagogy... etc, etc.
Or to offer programs and incentives that the unions won't agree to such as: longer academic year, longer school day, merit pay, on-call duty, at-home visits, non-traditional facility, non-traditional pedagogy, poor performance termination, etc...
As of 25 years ago this was THE way for a backpacker with a Eurail pass to see the continent during the summer. The cheap cars (ie 6 beds/room) were basically a youth hostel on rails. It was a fantastic way to meet other travelers and explore new cities together.
