Worked for a few years as a firmware engineer after undergrad (CS) but decided to get into education. I'm nearing a decade of teaching high school math and computer science in the US and abroad. I picked up another degree along the way (Georgia Tech's OMSCS) to keep my skills sharp. I'm now thinking of making the switch back into tech, preferably something related to education and/or games.

In Thailand at least, this is due to the high number of motorcycles/scooters. They're far more likely to die in a collision (about 80% of the fatalities are from motorcycles)

I think the simplest repeating word sentence is using "police". It isn't as impressive since it only employs two meanings rather than three but is much easier to grasp.

Who polices police? Police police. Police police police police.

But then who polices police police? Police police police. Police police police police police police.

When asked in court what was meant by the term "woke," Ron DeSantis' general counsel said "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." Other than using the modifier American, the parent comment's use of the term woke fits very well with this definition.

I've used Credit Unions my whole adult life and agree with you. Though I am now in a position that they don't work as well for me: living abroad. I've run into lots of small issues over the last few years so I caved and opened an account at a commercial bank for the first time to help decrease the friction.

He said he's going to teach high school computer science. As someone who made the same leap, it's cool to hear! He was really awesome about giving his games to teachers to use in their classrooms for free.

Normal is different for different people. It feels much more natural for me to breathe through my mouth. But I suppose the fact that "mouth-breather" is an insult meant to attack one's intelligence is a sign I'm in the minority on this.

Recently got my first VR headset. Played around in Unity and did their create with VR course then made my own game - Whack-a-mole in VR. Thinking of participating in GitHub's Game Off by making another game in VR but so far none of my friends have been interested in the idea (Which is fair, they work in software and code all day. I used to but I teach now so coding outside of work is much more fun). I'll likely just do another solo project and later on maybe rope some of my students into VR development for future projects.

A welcome change. I identify with one of the mentioned personas: I'm a teacher who has taught game programming and designed and have debated sharing articles from them based on the name. Especially while I was teaching at an international school in India.

I'm in a group for educators that use unity in the classroom and the most requested feature I've seen is having a way to utilize the tool from low power/cost devices like chromebooks. This seems right in line with that.

iirc in TI-BASIC, assignment goes the other way so you could have "B + 5 -> A" which also helps seeing that the expression would be evaluated before storing (the button to input -> on the calc is STO, short for store).

About: I am a computer science teacher (6 yrs) looking to return to tech after this school year. Before teaching I worked as a firmware engineer for a little over 2 years. Currently teaching IB Computer Science (SL/HL Y1/Y2), Robotics, Design Technology and Game Programming at the American Embassy School New Delhi. To keep my skills sharp while teaching I completed Georgia Tech's OMSCS program and have been developing side-projects like a Thai language memory game released on the Play Store using React Native. I think I'd be a great fit somewhere working in the education space given my experience.

Neat, thanks for sharing. I'm currently in Chanakyapuri near Chandragupta Marg. I now understand the significance of those names a bit more.

I've been learning Blender. Started with Blender Guru's doughnut tutorial then branched out from there. Made a simple virtual pet game where I made all the art myself. I ended up also downloading LMMS to make my own theme song for the game. It's been pretty fun.

I really enjoyed using Explain Everything on the iPad when I was making videos for my math classes. You can have prepared slides, with what you've drawn out pre-recorded but still edit in realtime. Show or hide features like webcam video, easily bring in outside resources like images, graphs, videos, etc... and record the live session and play it back later.

Just a guess: people already spent more time at home than in other areas so if the absolute amount of time increased at home the same as it decreased elsewhere, the percentage increase is smaller for homes than percentage decrease elsewhere?

Making good instructional videos is tough. Speaking loud enough, clear enough and slow enough to be understandable to as many people as possible with different levels of language proficiency can make it seem weird for some. I met Carl at a Unite conference and his voice sounded a little off compared to my memory of it and I realized it's because I've been so used to listening at 2x on those videos.

Correct. I've been using this with my high school Game Programming course this semester. It made the transition to distance learning pretty straightforward for that class. I think the title of the post should include the word Premium since Unity Learn in general is free, it's the Premium content that has been made free for 3 months.

I read about 25 books this year, here are the top 10 I look forward to reading in 2020, many of them informed by my favorites of 2019:

Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari - I read Sapiens this year and really enjoyed it. I just started this today one so I may finish that before the end of the year.

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman - I like books that make me think and from what I've heard, this will definitely do the trick. I read Factfulness this year and this was a suggested follow-up.

The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker - I've gotten really into natural languages since I've lived outside my country of origin for the last 2 and a half years and I've heard good things about this book being an entry point into linguistics.

Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski - With the new Witcher show coming out on Netflix I finally went back and beat The Witcher 3 then read the first book, The Last Wish. It was enjoyable enough that I want to keep going with the series.

Educated by Tara Westover - Was convinced by Bill Gate's blog this is worthwhile. I'm a teacher so it wasn't hard to convince me.

Robot Builder's Bonanza by Gordon McComb - I've been asked to teach a robotics course next year and this one seems to be The Book everyone recommends to dive into robotics.

Divided by Partition: United by Resilience by Mallika Ahluwalia - I recently visited the Partition Museum in Amritsar, Punjab, India and purchased this book there to learn about more stories about people impacted by this event.

The Elements of Computing Systems by Noam Nisan and Shimon Shocken - I just read Code by Petzold and it was one of my favorite books. Even though I studied Computer Science in University and most of the concepts weren't new to me, it was such a fun experience mentally "building" a computer from relays/transistors to logic gates and up to assemblers, compilers, and interpreters. I want to keep going with this and jump into the Nand2Tetris online course.

The Annotated Turing by Charles Petzold - Again, I loved Petzold's Code so I looked up other books he wrote and this one looks great. I've never actually read Turing's work so I'm excited to have some background and explanation to help me not just read the words but grasp their significance.

ZACH-LIKE by Zachtronics - I played through several Zachtronics games this year (TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O and Opus Magnum) so I can't wait to dive into some of the thinking behind creating these and similar games.
