I don't think you mentioned gyms. The Taiwanese are an oddly sports-oriented people. Throughout asia I can't think of an equal in terms of availability of cheap gyms. Public sports complexes are also sometimes good enough (but I've also found myself working out in a cramped room with a bunch of senior citizens on occasion :)).

I think you also didn't mention proximity to other countries for visiting. It's a very good location, and EVA is one of my favorite airlines.

Edit: Note that the things that make Taiwan great for living also, almost by default make it a "boring" country to some types of people. #1 for remote work possibly, definitely not #1 for thrill seeking, nightlife-type interests.

I don't find London to be dirtier than SF. Also I get the sense that it's a much bigger city in general, and of course your Stratfords will differ significantly from your Westminsters, although this can be said about basically every city.

Also I think London is slightly cheaper. Still, working remotely from London proper is probably a terrible idea given the extent of public transportation. Just live in Croydon and catch overground to London when necessary IMO.

There is nothing wrong with using new Array() to construct array of known capacity. By default, I think JS literal arrays will have a capacity of 4, so especially if you know you will have less than four elements, or a non power of two number of elements, this can be seen as a micro-optimization. `bluebird` uses new Array() extensively, e.g.

To the extent that it's relevant to the article in the OP, it could sure be better than normal for a lot of people. Working from home where previously it was not available, minimum wage being paid for people forced to stay home. It's basically a forced vacation. I'm sure some business owners are unhappy, but frankly I find reduced suicide rate predictable.

Agree with the op. Not only do I regularly struggle with location-based internationalization, sometimes I can't even /see/ pages depending on location. Tried to find the product page for new google ear buds thing (in Korea) and they refuse to even display it. Of course, setting up local ssh tunnel to ec2 machine based in US takes < 60sec but it's still annoying.

Here in Korea, some clubs were reopened and abrutly reclosed because of a spike in coronavirus cases linked to club. This totally confuses the objective. "Flattening the curve" is one thing, and "keeping everything closed until there is zero transmission ever again" is something else. It seems to me that the disease will be with us possibly forever. Whether we reopen today or 6 months from now. If LA County et al have this firm requirement of zero transmission to qualify for reopening:

(1) This is not "flattening the curve" (2) This threshold may possibly never be reached

Overhyped. California, particularly SV may be the best place to start a company if your "early adopters" are other SV people, tech industry, etc.. Cities like Atlanta represent a much more realistic, general-purpose market. In the social media age, I don't think there is much special benefit in SV early adoption mindset. Most consumers are savvy enough today.
