I'll never understand why people think being across the globe matters. Basically all internet crime can be done across the globe (plus tons of other types of crime like drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, etc).

Being in a different country doesn't give you free reign to commit crime.

US citizens/nationals/residents have rights that would be violated by an international court. For example, you can't have due process (as required by US law), a speedy trial, or a jury trial at the ICC. This makes the idea of handing people over to the ICC not only forbidden but wrong for obvious reasons.

Where ever they want to do business at. If they expect to be allowed to operate in France/the EU they will have to comply with legitimate French/EU warrants. No one is saying they can't fight it if there is a reason to.

I think you are confusing "privacy-oriented" and anonymous! Signal is pretty privacy oriented since it has E2EE by default (and so does Whatsapp). Telegram would be much more privacy oriented if it had E2EE by default.

The next step for telegram is pretty obvious. Stop collecting information about your users if you don't want to be forced to hand it over when given a valid government warrant. Of course that means they actually have to roll out E2E encryption by default so they probably won't do that.

This shouldn't surprise anyone. If a company collects info about some user and the government comes to them with a legitimate warrant they have to handover the information about that user (or risk going to jail/other action by the court) . There is a reason other companies like signal go out of their way to collect as little as possible.

There are tons of common words in English that use non English characters. No one argues those words need to be changed so I'm not sure why so many people here are so gungho about it.

Not really. If congress writes the laws intending the responsible agency to resolve ambiguities (which they do in just about every case) and doesn't object via CRA I don't see how that isn't an explicit approval.

Congress already has that power now though..? The congressional review act lets congress review and vote on new regulations issued by government agencies. Lots of people in this thread seem to be missing the fact that congress already approves of these agency rules. If they didn't they would have blocked them under the CRA.

There are plenty of laws where you don't need to be physically inside a country to be at risk of indictment (or equivalent).

It would be silly for a country to try and enforce every law they have on others abroad. That doesn't mean countries can't enforce certain laws on people who are abroad. I gave you 4 examples of laws that countries commonly enforce on people abroad and for good reason.

You've just argued yourself into saying that it is proper, good, and right for China to extradite you. If not you personally, then people you know who did say negative things about the CCP. Or took Muhammad's name in vain. Or, or, or..

No I didn't. China trying to extradite someone for criticizing them isn't the same as the US trying to extradite a Russian hacker who is behind a ransomware attack or a South American drug kingpin.
