A Polished UI is a Must-Have: User experience is no longer an afterthought. A polished, intuitive UI is crucial for user retention and satisfaction, making it a priority in the development process.

What are they talking about here? I feel like UI is significantly worse post-ZIRP. Look at what a mess Twitter/X has turned into. I also see a lot more UI bugs on various IOS apps (Reddit being the major one).

I think it's more of a Roku-issue. I have issues with Peacock, Paramount+, and Hulu on Roku. Getting a more expensive Roku stick instead of the TV default helped.

It is like condensing a reddit thread into a single article. You get a mix of news and immediate takes on the news.

Minor detail but did anyone else notice they are using eu-west-1? Kind of weird for the UK to be hosting there sites in another country (Ireland). I'm sure this isn't super sensitive data but still.

This might just be a misunderstanding. I believe Loon is still owned by Google X, which changed its name to X Development and sometimes just calls itself X. Then of course you have the unrelated Musk company also called X.

I'm interested in the cost of gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct. I've got a basic website using text-davinci-003 that I would like to launch but can't because text-davinci-003 is too expensive. I've tried using just gpt-3.5-turbo but it won't work because I'm expecting a formatted JSON to be returned and I can just never get consistency.

This article is funny. It looks like they pre-wrote and expected the JOLTS report today to be weak. But, it ended up being hot and they still published. Quits increased by 250k [1]. Quits haven't been that high since December 2022.

Based on this it seems pretty likely that it immediately imploded and the ‘banging’ was from the Titanic debris itself.

What I really like about ElonJet and Sweeney's other accounts is they included emission estimates. Really blew a hole in the idea that you could ever consider Musk or Gates to be environmentalists. A recent Musk flight between Washington and Miami emitted 9 tons of CO2 [1], which is nearly double what a fuel inefficient car would emit each year. How can you tell me I'm the problem with my single truck and couple of commercial flights each year when you've got multiple Teslas and hundreds of private flights each year?

It is truly incredible how Musk has this complete disregard for the American legal system (smoking weed on JRE while having a security clearance, sexual assault allegations on the company plane, taking Tesla private at $420, etc). It’s just baffling that the government continues to not act on any of these things. Seems like the only thing he’s been held accountable on was the Twitter deal but even that was on his own terms instead of the Delaware courts.

For me Instagram ads are nonrelevant and sort of deranged. Probably some of the worst that I regularly see.

For example, I just checked Instagram and got an ad for Amazon. In that ad they were trying to sell me a log splitter, a peanut butter squirrel feeder cage, 25lb sack of peanuts, and a aluminum garbage can you would find in a park. These things aren’t even remotely relevant to me.

I was looking into exporting a database from DuckDB to Postgres for use with Google Data Studio, but whenever I was exporting DuckDB was attaching decimals to integers. This was throwing off the entire import into Postgres. Think I’ll just try this out.

Being realistic for a second this storm probably killed every remaining private insurer and Citizens (state ran last-resort insurer) will probably have to be bailed out.

I was looking to move to Fort Myers or Fort Myers Shores with my girlfriend (she’s originally from there), and we looked at five different houses. Based on damage maps/satellite photos/Facebook posts all five of those houses were flooded. But, the problem is only two of them were in any sort of flood zones. The only reason we didn’t buy is because it looked like the market was tanking. I think there is a lot of blaming going on here against homeowners who really didn’t know better. FEMA really needs to update their maps to account for more catastrophic storms like this. It’s also important to keep in mind this storm could have been a lot worse. It was “only” a Category 4.

Very true. Where I live you need a building permit and an certified engineer to sign off plans for something as basic as a pergola.

Here in Florida, large parcels were bought up by developers and then subdivided into .25/.33/.50 acre lots. These were then sold off to people who eventually wanted to retire here. The problem is the building codes here are probably the most stringent in the US. So there are a lot of these parcels for sale on the cheap ($10k-$25k) but it’s still not worth doing anything with them.

A concern I’ve had here in Florida is that we’ve had people move here and buy homes that are “affordable” with their remote NYC/SF based jobs. But, these same homes wouldn’t be affordable to them with local jobs because the salaries are so lower here. The banks didn’t consider it a factor when lending to them. If the tech layoffs continue this could be a real problem.
