a pot that holds fluids at every conceivable angle with 20 temperature thresholds, 5 versions that hold liquid in a cloud for you, with monthly subscriptions, having the ability to get a "like a pot but make it left handed and only holds sand because this is what I need"

Ah I see you're familiar with PowerPot by Atlassian(TM)

Very powerful potware, pity about how much soil it leaks.

Funny, every time I've joined a new group for dancing or art classes or DnD or anything it's always 100% of the time a WhatsApp group, no questions asked. (This is in Ireland).

Never occurred to me that Americans wouldn't have a common group chat app everyone uses. Do Americans not all use iMessage, since pretty much everybody has an iPhone there?

I Changed My Name 12 days ago

It can go the other way. My partner has no middle name and recently got a formal letter from the HSE (Irish national health service) addressed to "Sorcha No Name Ní Shúilleabháin"*

*not her actual first and last name to be clear, not doxxing her on HN.

Would unironically love this. The ergonomics of using a decent controller are so much more comfortable to me than traditional driving controls. Just being able to rest the controller down on my lap and control the whole vehicle with thumbs and fingers is far less fatiguing for me than holding my hands up to a wheel and working pedals with my feet for longer journeys.

I wonder would a good, sharp needle and thread make for good mounting for a soft object like this? Thread the needle, pass it right through the strawberry and the secure the thread on something above and below. As long as the strawberry doesn't slide down the thread (hopefully a strawberry is light enough friction would hold it in place!)

Anyway, very cool splat, fair play

Had a lot of fun on the right side of the map lol.

Anyone else find the left side of the map causes the framerate to drop down to 15ish for some reason? Very odd, completely smooth otherwise. Firefox Android browser.

it won't be a big deal.

This isn't a space I know too much about, but even if we all start using quantum-safe encryption for everything today, won't the arrival of quantum computers that can break traditional encryption not still be a big deal?

Given that intelligence agencies, tech companies and various bad actors have been storing encrypted data for a long time, hoping to decrypt when (if?) that day comes?

Maybe in a world as culturally-fractured as ours two comments on twitter is as close to a zeitgest as you can get.

Maybe. Personally I'd say it'd take at least 5.

I love email (2023) 4 months ago

my current solution is to have a link which says "click to show email"

Yeah was thinking of going down that route, but I like the simplicity of just having it there there as a mailto link when you land. Based on Mike's response I might try it!

My email and matrix id are both on my front page at https://www.grepular.com

I've been tempted to put my email address directly on my personal site but just assumed I'd be flooded with automated spam. How have you found it?

Thanks for the detailed reply. I wrote and deployed a few dev-opsy python scripts in my last job that I wasn't massively proud of, but after reading that I all of a sudden don't feel so bad lol

part of the hiring process was to go get your blood tested by them

I know it would be far from the only illegal thing Theranos did, but that sure does sound extremely illegal.

Just took a look at what's running there and it looks like total crap.

The project I'm working on, meanwhile...

This could be the case even without an intentional conspiracy. It's harder to give negative feedback to poor quality code that's complicated vs. poor quality code that's simple.

Hence the feedback these models get could theoretically funnel them to unnecessarily complicated solutions.

No clue has any research been done into this, just a thought OTTOMH.

Beat you to it, my friend. My next job starts next week!

Good advice though, it really felt like a good point in my career to move on somewhere new.

Oh I have a lot of projects in my spare time already that I get fulfilment from. Just the 9-5 that doesn't do it for me. My original comment was a bit tongue in cheek though, I don't hate my job. It pays the bills and then some, and doesn't ask too much of me.

Would you mind me asking what age you were when you retired? I'm 28 and five years into my boring corpo career and need something to lust after lol
