I read an article sometime on 'the limits of Computation' or some such which stated even at moores law we would have substrate density of something approaching a singularity in something like 800 years. Does anyone remember this? Perhaps Imagine every post ai hard take off civilisation popping a new universe off in some other Brane or whatever but with their own slant on initial boundary conditions. Do you go with the flow in the main evolutionary branch or try for a fat tail with some revolutionary new thing (physics if you're really radical or just life chemistry if mearly genius). Or maybe you just want to stay home in computronium reality. Which is why the moon fits the sun..

He has made billions using twitter spamming Tesla and doge. It’s a playground for for the guy. And therefore cheap at almost any price. But of course why pay more than needed. On a more semi serious note: it must seem ludicrously easy for the guy. He has laid it all out: Mars needs: VTOL rockets since no infrastructure Methane due to atmospheric constraints Tunnels for transport see also infrastructure Starlink see also infrastructure Direct democracy via twitter ( imperator status exempt )

Have as many kids as possible since it’s obvious he will own the solar system. He ain’t gonna be that democratic therefore. Just another dynasty but maybe the last

If we assume single celled life is common, and exists in either all star systems, or in all systems without a hot Jupiter close to the star; then given the length of time involved here before eukaryotes, can we estimate how many planets in the galaxy have eukaryotes? Or how long it will be before some do? Presumably increasing the length of time increases the probability of occurrence as would increasing the number of stars involved. Though how can we know if the event was statistically likely after that amount of time or whether we are deviations from the centre of the distribution (other than observing the quiet galaxy). Surely we can have a rough idea now of where we stand

It is hard to take something like this seriously when the opening paragraph relates why the probe will try and communicate with Brownian motion or the random perturbation in a cloud; a similar reworked sentiment of the oft quoted intelligent desire to contact automobiles of earth; an absurd concept

There is a company called woolcool in the uk that produces wool sheets to replace styrofoam. The sheets are encased in thin perforated plastic. As as insulator it’s great, but it does get wet and it’s expensive. There are companies using it to deliver temp sensitive goods but if you do you have to get your customers to send it back to you to mitigate cost. No one talks about this and finding out the % of packaging returns is information no one volunteers. So you have to get them to return a box full and they also have to hang it over a chair or something to dry it out.

Strip it out of the plastic and a dog or cat will go nuts rolling in it!

WRT house insulation What happens if it gets wet. Moisture is mentioned in the article briefly but not really addressed properly.

The mushroom product doesn’t have any info on thermal insulation properties. Which is the key market. As someone else mentioned, it’s vague

There are trillions of dollars worth of manganese nodules from golf ball to basketball size just sat on ocean floors, many not far off from coast lines, many far deeper. Pumping them up has been an unsolved problem but Perhaps autonomous drone hoovers or shovelers could work. A usecase like this would spark enough interest / money spent on the problem to solve it. A ship that had a fleet of drones unloading to it 24/7 could pick up a lot of it. There is not just manganese in the nodules either.. I seem to remember most nations strategically banning collecting them a few hundred miles of their coasts should there be any.

I went onto study physics, I used to think about it every now and then. It’s not easy to characterise / quantify an answer but there was no experience of time, I was not aware enough of externalities to know what slow motion would be as that implies a connection to outer time. I don’t remember a cradle to present run through of memories but I certainly saw / experienced a slideshow and then ‘real time’ moments of positive interactions with people, which then moved on. Was that seconds or moments or just memory clusters firing I don’t know. Enough to re live the experience with a different perspective. of course early memories are not (for me)as complex or emotionally involving or nuanced with language so the bulk of memories were from later life. I have no recollection of the composition of ‘the slideshow’ but do remember for eg love for my mother in certain ‘scene(s)’ and that was more of a ‘real-time’ segment. A precession of memories certainly indicates time flow. I was dimly aware of the ground at the last moment as it came towards me and thinking back on it the scenes faded and real time came back along with my sense of the outside world aka the ground.

This happened to me as an 11 or 12 yr old. I was hit by a car that crossed a red light. The moment I was hit I saw my life and memories from it, certain pauses on interactions with key people and there were very overwhelming positive and calm emotions, but I saw everything and indeed strangely carousel style. When I hit the tarmac I was slammed back in real time and was scrabbling to hang on the front of the car as it didn’t stop for 50 yards and was dragging me under.

It had a profound impact on me. It makes sense it’s a human experience that’s ‘an unknown known’. I don’t buy the ‘survival mechanism’ theory, the nature of the experience was not one of search. It was over 30 years ago, but remains something I know to be ‘real’ as a phenomenon

Grabby Aliens 5 years ago

The 'dark forest model' is predicated on game theory. This same model controls nuclear conflict doctrine on earth and is responsible for megatons pointed at you right now. An old 50's methodology, absorb the Russians since we cant beat icbm's and dont trust they would disarm under a treaty. In a multiploar world arms races continue (this then is a mini analogue for grabby aliens but based on nation states). Worryingly usa now seeks asymetric dominance in this area increasing the likelyhood of conflict (or is it worrying?). I would say at this point that perhaps advanced intelligences, or even aumented humans of 50 years hence! Or decentralised direct democracies of 5 - 10 years from now! Or me! May consider 'game theory' and its paranoid centralised power adherants as psychotic and a smaller filter in of itself ( to our kind of socially structured lifeform). The dark forest has as its conlusion relativistic first strike weapons ( the same as the missile 'shield' )

I would think grabby aliens + uplift and absorption would answer the question of how they deal with new life. Dark forest is a fad imho, and if im wrong, well i dont think we'll be like that, and we will still succeed if we get out of this period

Some of you may be interested in the book 'path notes of an american ninja master' by Glenn morris. It describes his path to enlightenment in a what you could describe as a modern and colourful way (and has a great bibliography). If you or dont believe in it as a physical process its still an entertaining read

Many people live in such dire conditions and under such stress, the idea of looking up and 'enjoying' the sky will be meaningless. The stars could be a curtain so far as most of humanity is concerned.

We will have to build observatories on the far side of the moon and at lagrange points and in orbit.

Between now and then there is and will be a struggle to get out of the planets gravity well and into space. There will be some detrimental effects, but the benefit of planetary connectivity via sat internet will help so many its hard to put a value on it. If capitalist competition is not desired then there must be a state designated max cap on sat numbers forcing them to iterate on the ground and possibly cooperate.

As someone who has been on the waiting list for an astrophysics scope for some 9 years (!) I can feel the light pollution trauma, though for normal people observing from the ground the albedo of these things will not approach city light pollution.

Disbarring space launches for this reason is similar in the notion to not landing on mars until decades or millenia of sterile robot landers have confirmed or otherwise the presence of life. Reality, waste decades doing this and find you contaminated it anyway with your robot, but it had no effect on life which is robust.

Lets just get out there finally and get stuff done. Most scope viewing is done on cameras anyway now and not by eyeballs.

The world is still a big place. The day you can be connected anywhere and take a vtol to tunguska is still some time distant. The sky of such a world will be congested but there may still be sky slices present.

I have a pet idea that if star lifting or some stellar engineering is used and it were to alter emission spectra in some detectable way that we could look for clusters of stars with the same altered emission, or just clusters of stars with some non normal emissions. At least it would be possible to scan alot of the sky quickly with a method like this. I suppose i dont know enough about stellar spectra to know if fingerprints like this could be out there

There is considerable reportage of food stamp usage on for e.g sugar soda based drinks, and whether even restrictions on usage such that vegetables should be purchased and soda banned to inhibit diabetes. Inference being ' its our money and 'they' dont know whats good for them'. Ubi would be distributed as some credit ( not 'money' ) , and in an era where everything is tracked, its usage and your monitoring by the 'state' (or whatever apparatus is used) does not paint a pretty picture of utopian freedom. It may also be an exercise in converting money to a digital format to enable negative rates and forced expenditure. The poorest will likely not resist such a change, it will seem a bargain. Cash would abolished for all and 'banks' and 'bankers' would be permanently entrenched.

Certainly automation will potentially free up some labor, and the currently underway automation of thought processes will take out some (or all) middle class roles. Until there is some sort of direct democratic methodology i would not trust any of these utopian policy makers. A future where you own nothing, and timeshare a place of living, transport etc strikes me as one with zero social mobility and is a prime candidate for corruption.

Its a place you need the stainless steel rat to visit and disrupt.

Otoh i guess i could be wrong and it could be just super.

Nature has devised molecular machinery specific to our time on this earth. Want to freeze yourself for a deep space trip? There is a creature that can do that. Want to regrow limbs? Survive like a tardigrade? Not get cancer? Everything we need is out there. Some of it will be key to the future. In some cases it took many millions of years to evolve. Vancomycin came from soil, what else lies in wait for bio-prospectors and molecule hunters? Nothing if its all dead. There should be a prime directive and it should be for life on this planet

If you read his reply / notes to the sec, he states how he was able to place orders without being front run. He asked developers to amend sierra chart. As a result, if placing a large contract order, rather than see price tick away from it he got instant fills. Ive zero doubt this is why he was fingered. Taking from the hf funds.. who think they have some right to impose a defacto tobin tax on transactions and justify it by calling themselves "liquidity providers!" He is guilty of spoofing, but the flood is caused by bots, or when they stop playing. He mentions his networth was constructed mostly over 50 days. On ' normal days ' you have to contend with smaller ranges where entries are key and those sort of intant fills are a massive advantage. Of course since he documented it the cat got out of the bag, many that had used this method were super annoyed! Bitmex seems to be the new wild west these days, all those techniques are used and more with 0 accountability

Apart from the Aerion as2 i dont think there are many other credible supersonic aircraft in development other than the Nasa one. Concorde, other than the booms, had engines so loud, and i mean insanely loud they would not be popular these days. I remember covering my ears as it flew overhead.

I do find Elon Musks frequent mentions of a vtol ss aircraft quite interesting. Electric engines would not have the same issues at high altitude as conventional ones. Battery density is starting to get in the right area to make this feasible.

He is frequently distainful of flying cars but one logical conclusion of this is indeed potentially flying cars (Tesla secret projects anyone?). When you think about how much of the world is inaccessible, one of these would make a great thunderbirds style exploration vehicle ( provided it had a large expandible solar array stowed somehow) . Fancy a trip to the Kamchatka ground zero? No problem! I wonder whether aerodynamically they would not need to be so concorde like and maybe just bullet shaped. Perhaps on Mars you could have supersonic blimps

They know how to use glass. We had a rooftop area enclosed by glass and the crows would frequently corral pigeons there and kill them, either directly pecking them or indirectly chasing them into the glass. They may know how to use it, but what is it? This is another question..One morning i heard clicking / tapping coming from upstairs near this roof top; up the stairs i went, i peered over the top of the stairs toward the door to the rooftop, and saw two of them tapping the glass, then looking at each other, then tapping the glass again. They saw me and flew off in a panic. I may be anthropomorphising but it sure did look like they were sizing up this wonder material between them! I felt like i had seen a window into their world in that moment before i was spotted.

The bitcoin "bubble" was caused by an invention in the ecosystem. Bitcoin was "stuck" for a long time around $300, because it is not much good @ 10 mins tx time. Then a solution was published, the lightning network whitepaper. A mere 5 days later volume exploded and a period of 6 months of accumulation occurred where price was contained by large bid / ask walls. Volume dropped off after this point and the price rocketed up. The ultimate destination was the joint mcap of visa and mastercard, which it would in theory now be able to compete with at some point, which worked out at 18k per coin at the time. The collapse afterward is due to the fact that it must be used in this way and at that tx magnitude to justify that valuation. Your basic buy the rumour sell the news variation. It might thus range around 10k for a long time. Whether those who accumulated used bots or tethers or both to drive the price up rather than it being organic price action is debatable, and it seems difficult to prove. What is interesting to me is how fast money went to work on this after the technical hurdle was overcome.

This does not contain goldmemory. I'm not sure when that stopped being part of it. I accidentally discovered (due to it being on hirens) that it finds faulty dimms very effectively. The same dimms will run memtest faultlessly but non the less cause a bsod. So i suppose im a fan of that software! It actually helped me alot, many eons ago i would build alot of machines for networks, and in trying to determine the cause of bsod or restarts i eventually discovered it was always purely ram at fault.

Well, why not? As many point out it has interesting engineering challenges, and gives particle physicists something to do.. However, maybe there is nothing to do after all. One wonders if this is a last hail mary for those clinging to super symmetric particle theories or maybe for multiple higgs ideas. Or just for a job. There doesnt seem any sound reason to me to think the particle desert isnt real and wont stretch all the way to GUT energy. Though i suppose 13.4 - 100 may yield extra discoveries of some nature. I used to read this blog http://resonaances.blogspot.com, though im not a particle physicist, it was interesting. The posts dried up and it was hard not to detect pessimism after a null result via supersymmetry. Indeed i seem to remember hearing no one would want to go into particles as a career now and many will pivot into condensed matter physics etc. So what are they gonna do for 25 years? I guess the youngsters 25 years hence will have to dust off the particle books. Meta materials, gravity waves and plasma physics are so much more intetesting now.. I seem to remember reading about plasma wave accelerators the size of a table top many years ago with giant theoretical energies. Interesting to note the ssc had 40 Tev energy which would have fairly concretely answered the ss question without the need of another machine
