Gemini is my go to now when I need a recipe. Pick a recipe site, any recipe site, and its guaranteed to be the most painful experience on mobile, and slightly less painful on a laptop experience you have on the web. Pure fucking trash. And if you happen to be a recipe publisher who does this and is reading this, fuck you.

Enter Gemini. It consistently can give me a text only version of the recipe that I can copy into a notes app if I want with zero pain. Zero. Now I have my own set of "wtf are you doing Gemini" and "why are you halucinating on this request" experiences at work with Gemini, but recipe extraction.. the goat.

I suspect 99.5% of blogs like this don't make any appreciable amount of money from ads. Which begs the question, why even do it? If it cheapens your readers experience and you are not making significant money from it, just don't do it at all. Everyone thinks their blog will make money, few do.

Also, if your not using an enterprise edition of gemini where your data is not used for model training, your sensitive data prompts and responses is 100% available to google.

"No ads" is possible. It's a choice really. Too many bloggers also want to make money and think ads are the way to do it. That's certainly their right, but it doesn't have to be that way.

Want no ads, start browsing gopher sites. No ads there. Or find people making blogs just because they want to. They exist. Github + Jekyll is a great option for free static blogging if your willing to spend a little time getting it setup and learning something new.

I don't see his post as an attempt to self-promote as some commenters here have made. To what purpose? He's already known to most adults, already rich beyond anyone could possibly dream to be. And it sounds like from the post that he already had this path planned albeit several decades after his death.

I think accelerating that timeline is a good thing as I think he will be better than anyone who came after to direct how the funds as applied.

This is great advice. For myself, docking in windy situations can be nerve racking. The old adage is to only dock as fast as your willing to hit the pier, and for me this means slow as hell.

It's easy to eat a balanced diet that without starches. A steak with a double portion of vegetables and a side salad will still get you some carbs and sugars naturally. Keto/Paleo etc. all include veggies. its really not just meat.

My frustration with BSD is in the desktop arena when wanting to use a laptop. Want to use modern laptop hardware? Good luck. I get that this use isn't the core that BSD focuses on, but seriously, it's a huge potential market for people that want a secure/stable system. Right now you either need to use extremely old hardware (Thinkpad T60 era) or face many obstacles. Which is a pity.

Like almost everyone I've done the blogging thing on blogging platforms, on hosted traditional sites, on github with jekyll, etc. At some point I always get tired of dealing with it, question why I am even posting something, and what the whole point of it is.

Essentially what I want is a journal, and as my vanity continues be killed, I'm sure I'll eventually go to using an actual paper journal.

Right now I am one step away, I've been using gopher to blog on SDF.org. A huge reduction in audience, and since it is text based, its about as simple as you can get.

This is one of the reasons I like Jekyll. No PHP, no bullshit. It's fast, pre compiled pages. You can use web fonts if you like, or keep it all local. Speed usually takes a hit with websites when people try to monetize or add fancy features..

While EchoLink doesn't have the same visceral feel that a radio has in your hands, it can be interesting. By connecting those repeaters to EchoLink I can directly broadcast on them. Which is pretty fun.

Startups by their nature seem to rarely have the correct amount of resources for projects/sprints/etc. Anytime you try to cram five gallons of shit into a one gallon bucket, there are going to be repercussions.

Some people thrive on that environment, others like more traditional, better staffed and funded environments. Each to their own I guess. I feel sorry for this guy and his family, no job is worth that.

Would like to be a back country forest ranger. Someone who does work out in the remote woods. Not one of the rangers that has to deep with the public. The problem like most of us have is that our position and tenure in IT has lead to salaries that make such a change (and reduction in pay) almost impossible. Add kids, etc. and it gets set permanently in the dream category.

I know the logical response to this statement is: Reduce your needs and the reduced pay won't be an issue. While true, I don't think I am that flexible sadly.

I'd disagree with you a bit. It's perfectly possible to host a blog for free on Github or other sources (can even use jekyll themes) and just pay the yearly cost for a domain name. A domain name costs $10-20 a year. That's affordable.

I somewhat disagree with this statement. While I agree completely that certifications do not equate to ability, education is never a bad thing.

For example, many of the SANS GIAC courses are run by industry experts that have a lot of real world experience. For example, I took the GCIH taught by John Strand (BHS) and the GCIA taught by Mike Poor (InGuardians) with material joinly developed with Judy Novak.

This may be unique for SANS courses, but I personally found combining quality education material with well vetted instructors that have real world experience to be quite useful.

It's certainly not a substitute for having real world experience, but quality education can be worthwhile.

That's not what matters. What matters is that the information is correctly documented. Taxes man. They make a difference. Say I make $100 a day before taxes. I get a check that shows they took out $25 for federal, $5 for State, etc. Whoopie, my take home is $70. At the end of the year I get a W-2 showing all the taxes they company took out etc..

But what if they just give me a hand written check for $70 made out to me, Joe Blow. There is no indication of taxes being taken out, but hey, I got $70, so all is great right? Wrong..

At the end of the year I get a W-9. They say I wasn't an employee but a contractor. I have no proof that they took out taxes and now suddenly I am on the hook to pay taxes to the government that were already taken out by the crappy employer and pocketed.

See the problem now?

I know this to be the biggest red flag from personal experience. Happened to me at a small start up in Illinois of all places 20+ years ago. I was fresh out of college the naive to things, trusted in the owner. Got royally screwed. It was a formative experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone but it taught me a very valuable lesson the result of which is that I have only worked at well established companies since.
