Are you saying that the incentives provided for successfully mining a block in crypto's isn't necessary to their security? I can't think of a single expert that agrees, or an example in the space of that working. Block reward is typically thought of as a tradeoff between security and inflation.

upvotes & downvotes are just the most obvious solution to the noise problem that plagues the internet. Nothing at cost is a blessing and a curse at the same time. We won't solve the internet until we figure out how to solve these fundamental issues in a sustainable bottom-up and incentive-driven way. Which is clearly an immensely hard problem.

You're not wrong, but neither is the person you're responding to. You responded with logic for why the vaccine was a good idea, while they only talked about what was typical in the past. Past American medical philosophy has mostly been dictated by an attitude of "do no harm" rather than "optimize for least harm". These yield very different recommendations.

Safety glassed would have been a good idea, any rubber can suddenly fail. But he is absolutely right that "creaking noises" are common in wood far far far below their breaking point. I suspect he calculated the strength of all these things if he went to that much trouble for the sling. Also the markings on the bolt heads showed they were grade 8 (those 6 radial lines) which are near the best common off-the-shelf bolt strengths you can get. The OG wooden sling breaking was likely a nuanced issue stemming from it's rotational speed, so not a risk during the cranking stage. The sling wasn't even under load at that point. High-speed rotational effects are many orders of magnitude harder to predict than the needed strength of a base structure. But yes, safety glasses would have been wiser.

Which means a giant physical structure to support that giant lever arm. When you scale up to things that can knock down castle walls I suspect the difference is incredible.

Is the abuse typically just people re-signing up continually every two weeks? Or are there other super common abuses? This isn't my field and I have always detested the commonly required CC inputs for free trials, so interested to know more about the motivation from software builders.

I think it's also important to keep in mind that at minimum it would take a generation to truly solve in a root-cause way (one that won't just come back the minute you focus on something else). Many of these biases get built during childhood when your brain is so so much more plastic.

I look at New Zealand and see close to the opposite. A near-complete failure. They've isolated themselves from the world for nearly 2 years, and have approximately zero things to show for it. They're not significantly vaccinated (25%, what happened??) and have no plan to be able to re-open up anytime soon.

It sounds harsh, but I don't see that they've done a lot other than waste 2 years of their life sitting on their hands.

Also, Ethereum Classic has been 51% attacked and then reversed transactions a few times. So not sure if author is recommending ppl avoid altcoins entirely?

But most things of this type specifically arent settled, they're settled in cash and rolled over, again and again and again, forever. Look at the volumes traded for these derivatives, numbers are insanely high. People don't mostly use them to do what they were intended (hedge a poor rain year or similar), but to GAMBLE. The rest is mostly just narrative.

I don't think this is a good argument at all. They'd have to be "technical" enough to write down 13 words when instructed, and they'd have to be "smart" enough to happen to be early.

So basically no technical or smarts are needed to get to this situation. If anything this suggests the person is your fairly average "dumb" user.

Most virologists say the way this virus works is unlike anything they’ve seen or expected so they can’t imagine how a human would have engineered it. Why do you think your feeling about the virus’s level of adaptation trumps the experts opinions?

1) Citation on "most" please. The world is a big place, so you will be able to find a citation for any opinion. If you are going to say "most" then please back it up with a source.

2) gain-of-function research doesn't require a human to engineer a new virus. It is a way to essentially speed up evolution and allow nature to do the heavy lifting. You're arguing points that no on here is making.

No one argued that it should be applied as an axiom. You're responding to an argument that wasn't made.

Also, the "gatekeepers of knowledge" have a mostly.....negative past when you look at the sum of recorded human history. Are you arguing that humans today are just way better and far more trustworthy than the rest of history?

This reply only makes sense if covid-19 popped up at a random spot in Wuhan....and not literally right next to their coronavirus research lab.

It's not hard to believe that there could be another spillover event, and I don't have any certainty where covid-19 came from, but you're unfairly downplaying the level of circumferential evidence that does exist. There has been a significant effort against evaluating the lab-leak as a reasonable hypothesis (I say that in the scientific meaning of the word), and that effort has significantly damaged the reputation of scientific institutions around the world, and for good reason.
