Exactly. Case in point: I worked on an investment team that had a product that at the time would close at $2b in assets. We were top 5% on 1/3yr performance, so we had incoming demand. The dept head was paid on sales per calendar year, so he forced us to accept the last $300m of assets in December at 0.60% fee. Our average fee on the existing $1.7b? 1.25%. If we had waited for the other pipeline biz to close in Jan-March, it would have been at least 1% fee. Many dumb buisness decisions are just logical decisions for a individual based on incentives that you can't see. They happen to be at odds with the goals of the firm as a whole.

I was in investment management for a us bank - here the requirement is all officers must take 5 consecutive days off to ensure at least one weekend is covered. Cars have very low profit margins. Last time I checked a few years ago, the gross margin on an average American car was 10-15%. This doesn't count finacing.

True. But any refill that doesn't state the fact upfront is also fraud. If a company is transparent that you will be automatically charged every year, and has an easy way to cancel before the date, well then that's on me. I've paid those obligations even if I'm not using the product. My question was instinctive to ask because I've heard that incorrect canonical settings make you open to this sort of attack. True, but those places don't put up with the rampant public antisocial behavior on the streets San Fran seems to embrace. I've been around the world to many dangerous places for work and service, and the only place I saw someone take a dump in public on a sidewalk was in San Francisco. He was 3 feet from one of the public toilets the city had installed (this was 2001, I think they cost $0.25 to use at the time?) This isn't some new phenomenon.

Legally. I don't believe the path to citizenship is paved if you are working and staying in either of those countries illegally. Both Australia and Canada are quite picky on whom they let in. It's points based, supposed to be fit to the needs of the country. For giggles, I took my score for Canada. As a middle-aged individual, I wouldn't be able to get in under the normal program even while nearly topping out most other categories (I speak English and French, have advanced degrees, etc). Of course, you can buy your way in to almost any country.
