There are all kinds of products that we need to reject not because the fundamentals aren't awesome for some proportion of people, but because the implementation is as obviously corrupt as the business owners pushing it.

The dumb speaker that OpenAI is hoping you stick in your home to spy on you is not some preposterously worthless piece of crap from beginning to end without exception. It's just a creepy mess that's nowhere near worth it for anybody who cares about themselves or anyone who ever visits their domicile. That doesn't mean that it isn't pretty nice to have your hands full of grease and be able to get a small piece of information using your voice.

All about the details. You want to ethically produce something private at reasonable cost without excessive energy usage to serve useful functions, sign me up. Just no cloud, no privacy invasion, an entire impossible wishlist for companies not as cool as e.g. Framework.

Analytics: if you generate them on my device, and bury an option to manually send them to you when I have a bug--or...

you instead bury an opt-in to automatic telemetry, and let us CC ourselves each ~month when the analytics get sent in to you (so we can verify it's all boring data)...

It's hard for me not to opt in to stuff like that, at least periodically. If I'm opted-in by default? Ehhhhh.... I totally get it, weird "flying blind" (quoting a different dev w/similar philosophy), but I guess I'm still weird myself and hence looking for that autonomy or something? Oh and if somebody makes something opt in, and then certainly if they furthermore stick the option somewhere slightly off the beaten path, that seems pretty darn trustworthy.

(I wonder if we'd have enough public data for a decent statistician to calculate a likely number range of how many users you have by extrapolating from the 1% to 10% or 20% of users who'd chose to opt in...)

Have to be quite careful about this. Avoid--I think this was it--using Gmail to reply to your own email (like when someone doesn't follow up on it), or it'll leak.

Also have to be incredibly careful Mail (macOS, even iOS IIRC) doesn't change your Sent From address from the just-generated Hide My Email address to your default with no warning or rationale. That is a HORRIBLE bug.

I also could understand when a response hits someone like a ton of bricks, especially if their primal reaction is to go into denial mode. They might be looking for someone to kind of shake them and emphatically repeat the information they aren't thrilled about receiving. (or are thrilled about receiving! “Don’t get my hopes up, you’re serious right now?!“) And I imagine your response suited the purpose.

Do technologists have more respect for the idea you can train a model to be on your side with a constitution than they might’ve at first?

I'm sure the concept seemed just about purely preposterous to many when the models were in their infancy. Now I figure instead it seems mostly preposterous to many.

The near-instantaneous nature of Parakeet has led me to keep using it and occasionally simply re-dictating a second time as needed.

For round two after a typo-laden transcript, I’m dictating and annunciating with great passion as I read the first transcript to make sure I don’t miss a beat. It’s kind of fun because it’s a little performance.
