You vastly underestimate the size and diversity of India. Their middle class is bigger than that of the USA or I think even that of the entire EU.

The can have a low rate on pretty much every statistic, while still having a higher total amount of it than us, simply due to.the sheer size of people. They could have an entire state, more modern, rich and with more people than Germany, while keeping their current statistics. No problem.

Also: Are you Indian (I think not), or what is your basis for the ”rootless“ statement. To us Germans, Americans appear rootless. But we are not competent to judge that!

Finally, things like this right here ARE how you get Indians out of poverty and illiteracy! Even if just via the resulting businesses lobbying for more education.

Here in Europe, we actually use mostly trains. Trucking is for the smaller deliveries, like some five bathtubs from Sweden to Germany.

And we use trains for humans too.

Why do we need bookmarks when we have softlinks. They are the same concept, and an OS that makes a distinction, is a faulty OS, IMHO.

And with JS, as a former pioneer web developer: A website whose HTML relies on a certain way of being presented or a certain interactive logic, is a defective website, full stop. The whole point of HTML, is that it is semantic markup, and semantic ONLY! E.g. an audio browser must work just as fine with a website. If one’s website fails at that, it’s because of disinfomatiom spread by the What(TF)WG and because of incompetence, and the causing people must be fired.

We can already make anti-matter, as it't essentially the process of making matter bounce off, using a photon, in such a way that it reverts its time direction. Or, in classical view: Turn a photon into a particle/antiparticle pair. The problem is, of course, that it first takes those shitloads of energy, that it would release later.

And to actually find anti-matter in nature, you would most likely have to turn into anti-matter yourself, travel back in time, and somehow survive the big bang without touching anything, to come out the hypothetized other side where time is reversed and anti-matter expanded to. Or try to get inside a black hole, and revert your direction of motion (as time and space are reversed in there). Both not yet technically available, to say the least. ;)

Also, no word about what they will acually use. Because classic uranium is a quite limited resource actually. It has been said to run out even before fossil fuels.

Also, why not a fusion rocket? Given that we know how to make fusion bombs. Because until we find a massive amount of anti-matter, this will be the next best thing for a loong time. The only limiting factor would be a human body's ability to withstand G forces.

They are mostly "refurbished" (=repaired and cleaned), and then sold again. If possible, even as new. Or, of course, sent back fixed.

The problem with permanent records is, that it forces you to never change. Meaning you deliberately keep a murderer a murderer. Even in cases where their life completely changed since then and they are a valuable contributor to society again.

E.g. no matter how much you try … meet with your old buddies from the school/city you left decades ago … and suddenly you’re the same loser again, getting bullied just like back then.

And if my loved ones were murdered, the LAST thing I would want, is for the murderer to not even be allowed to do good in the world to balance the evil. Or to act like they did too, and do to them as they did to me.

Because as a child of people who had to murder in war, to not be tortured and raped and murdered (three of my family membera were still murdered and two tortured), I know very well, that there is no such thing as mentally undamaged/unharmed person that intentionally murders somebody when it looks like she has a choice. Or who does no regret it when they come to their senses.

Let people heal! Violence, even simple holding a grudge and shaming, which is what you did, dear journalist, is not making anything better. Only worse.

We aren’t truly out of the dark ages, until we forego revenge (aka ”punishment“ aka violent harm) and manage to fix even murderers and rapists to make them functioning parts of society again.

We certainly love improving stuff. But more than half the point of programming is, that you only have to come up with and do it once. We just copy the code, and add our improvement.

And open source developers aren’t interested in a ”career“, but in making a good program.

Frameworks are another pathological case of monolithism by the way. Use libraries. That can be combined however you want. Under your rule. Not frameworks. That accept no other framework beside them. Under their rule.

If your libraries and environment do all the work, writing a small program that does big things approaches triviality.

That’s the thing with your brain: Everything is kinda like that! All the time.

Most of your brain literally cannot distinguish between fantasy, dream, stories, and actual experiences.

And the parts that do, will never be able to tell if it’s all just made up.

Philosophically, there is no ”reality“ but that what you perceive. Which, due to relativity, is, well, highly relative too. There is no absolute reality either. You can literally have conflicting facts about even simple things, that both are true, and scientifically verifiably so. (Like ”Who shot first?“. Or ”What particle came first?“.)

So be very wary whenever you are confident about such things. Because that is only possible with enough convenient ignorance.

Browsers are a case of monolithism (and the inner-platform effect, of course).

In actuality, they are multiple different kinds of programs, welded together for no sensible reason.

* A http fetching daemon. * A "runner" to open URLs. * Several document viewers. * A virtual machine. * An OS with an API. * Extensive libraries for everything that the OS below the OS already offered. * One or several programming language JIT compiler(s) and runtime(s). * And some bits and pieces.

In a healthy environment, there would not be a second OS on top of the normal one. And all those parts would be separate software, with standardized interfaces. Doing one thing and doing it right. (Most of which already exist in the OS, and don't have to be reinvented. Case in point: WebSockets. Or, worse even, DNS over HTTP.)

That is what we should work towards.

Not that Google would ever not fight that, tooth and nail.

It's clear that India is the next China: The country that we order cheap manufactured goods from, so our own CO2 numbers keep looking good and we don't have to concern ourselves with worker rights, pollution, etc.

I used to block ads on ShoutCast, 15 years ago.

StreamRipper cut the streams by ID3 tag change and accompanying silence. My script just played the ripped MP3s, and ignored the ones with an ad-like ID3 title or that were too short to be a song. You could either pre-record and then skip backward and forward, or listen live and have nothing played back in the ex-ad gaps.

I even had a remote control with "keep current" and "keep previous" buttons, to put the songs into my archive.

Until the Content Mafia ruined everything to keep their cocaine flowing. :/ (I worked in there, and I have enough material, to testify on the cocaine abuse that dominate[ds] the industry.)
