Gates is towing the party line, he just wants to keep status quo. All the companies suing the government are doing it for the theatre "oh please Mr Government, you REALLY REALLY shouldn't take this data and use it", meanwhile they're salivating at the thought of actually collecting this for the government and tying it up with a nice neat bow.

What civil disobedience could Snowden have done? Nothing that would have caused a discussion of this magnitude. And even with all that he's revealed, the government is still going on with business as usual. There will be no substantive change. It's really disgusting how few people care about this - "if you're doing nothing wrong then you have nothing to hide" - if I hear this one more time I'm going to puke on someone's shoes.

I had to wait until my 40's to gain weight. In HS I weighed 125lbs (at 6'1"). Boot camp (PI) put on 17lbs in 3 months through a combination of a sadistic DI and good food. I stayed at 142 until... you say react as if there's an awareness by the group of organisms that they are dying out, when that's far from the truth. Think of a species as a network, with the leaf nodes around for only a specific length of time. Add in several events that isolate portions of the network, and it dies off in spurts, as each isolated portion becomes less fit and eventually ceases reproduction.

With the decline in our birthrate, it will be interesting to see (from a historical perspective, I'll be long dead) if we die out, or if we get out of this funk we're in now.

I work in the IT business - there are plenty of times when weekend work is the only way to get something done (don't get me started on broken architecture that precludes rolling weekday rollouts). I just take the time away from some other day. And I'm not averse to overtime either, in exceptional circumstances. But for me, salaried means that I do my job as efficiently as possible, and if there's nothing to do, I don't work.

I had a boss tell me at an end of year meeting that another employee had worked 1000 more hours that year than I had. I looked my boss in the eye and said "then he's doing something wrong". Consistent 60 hour weeks is a failure of management and of the employee to better manage their time. Especially if you are salaried.

I don't think that makes any sense. I mean, I literally don't understand what you're trying to say, and none of your assertions seem to be relevant to each other.

Think about it this way: which sex has historically been unequally represented in the most dangerous jobs? And which sex is STILL the only sex that has to sign up for the draft?

And sure they're relevant.

It's a complex situation, one we're not going to resolve any time soon, if ever. I believe (and it's just from my observations) that the cultural 'oppression' grew out of very real biological differences. But as our population has grown, the reasoning behind the gender roles has lessened in importance to us for survival as a species. There may yet come a time when the roles are again needed, but for now at least, it's time to relax and let people be who they want to be.

I think what the GP means is that there is a very vocal, very vitriolic subsection of the feminist movement that claim there is NO reason for the differences in men and women, other than the historical repression of women by men. Which couldn't be further from the truth: up until recently, women were very much at the mercy of the groups of men around them (physically), and only recently has the value of women in society dropped to that of men. </dons flamesuit>

It's interesting watching the conversation over sex differences take shape. On the one hand, we have a group of people that say even though males and females are biologically different there are NO differences in the way we think or perform. At the other extreme you have the "girls are nurturing, males are war-like" argument. What it really is is a combination of both nature and nurture. The effects of testosterone and estrogen are well known. Brain plasticity is a marvelous thing. Add to that 'developmental windows' where certain behaviors and predilections become our (as in each individual person's) baseline behavior and you have a fantastic spectrum of humanity. Average people will tend more toward stereotypical behavior, because the stereotypes define average. Those at either end of the spectrum may be a hyper stereotype or a stereotype defying unique one-of-a-kind individual. Don't hate it, embrace it.
