Agree. I could afford "better" but the Neo suits my needs perfectly and I don't like expensive laptops that are prone to damage and theft. Dollar for dollar it is the best computer I've ever bought.
No idea, but at least Microsoft has some semblance of support where you can talk to a person.
I (reluctantly) gave up on the Mac several years ago. Being on a PC might initially seem clunky and unrefined but it is actually very freeing to be able to choose my manufacturer, the OS, components, have tons of ports available, compatibility with older hardware (especially low res monitors). Standards and modularity are a beautiful thing.

I paid a little more and waited a couple weeks to receive a Delta single handle faucet for my kitchen back in 2020, rather than just buying what was available on the shelf at Lowe's. Model: #400LF-WF. The reviews at the time said it was basically the same faucet made back in the 60s. I'm glad I did - it has been an excellent faucet.
I agree with your overall point but I'm starting to regularly see older M series MacBooks on sale for around 600 or 700 dollars brand new. Maybe they are using the strategy of selling older hardware for less like they did with the iPhone SE.

The job market is scary. I can afford a better house right now but am scared shitless I won’t be able to keep my income up. So we stay in our small old house for now, maybe forever.
I thought they were just a web portal and email service. It is amazing they still offered ISP services this long.
They had some pretty unscrupulous business practices back in the day with their free trial CD mailers. My cousin worked in their call center ages ago and would sometimes convince even people who didn't have a computer to pay for the service.
MacOS is unusable to me now. I had to switch back to Windows. There is something about the iOS aesthetic on MacOS that looks like they just smeared Vaseline all over everything and this new glass design doesn't help.
I don't know much about Gambas but it seems it is Linux only whereas Xojo is cross platform.
Have you checked out Xojo? It is a VB6-like language with a similar development UI. There are desktop and web versions.

I haven't really used it - I'm just a hobbyist coder who enjoys the VB6 style development of the desktop version of Xojo.
My mother recently passed away after a long battle with dementia. Apparently when she would forget an account existed or she could not log in she would create another account. She had multiple email addresses and Facebook profiles that I know of.
I’ve been able to get Facebook to close a couple of her profiles but for the rest they keep asking for the same documentation over and over again (death certificate and funeral booklet) but will not take any action.

I liked CityDesk so much I wrote a clone of it in Xojo (then Realbasic) about 15 years ago. It has wysiwyg, templates, uses sqlite instead of a MS Access DB. Sometimes I think about making it public but don’t know if anyone would be interested these days.
I have a similar goal (1 laptop) but with a concession to have one monitor, probably with a built in USB C hub, as a docking station just for ergonomics sake.
Eventually it might be possible to only have a mobile phone that docks to a monitor and runs a full desktop os, like Samsung DEX.
Xojo is basically VB6's spiritual successor.
I like the earlier Civ games, up to around version 4 for this reason. Less complexity and micromanagement.

I appreciated the simplicity of Works. It was quick to start up and used less system resources than Office. PCs were so dog slow before SSDs. I used Works in college until some of my later classes required some advanced features that the Works spreadsheet could not provide and I was forced to start using Excel.
Apparently she is still alive at 102!

I also miss some aspects of retail. Life was easy when all I had to do was show up and stock the shelves. Co-workers were a lot easier to talk to and make friends with. I actually had pretty good insurance for about $20 a week too (this was 15+ years ago).
Godspeed. I remember putting a $50 8 bit Sound Blaster in my 386 when I was 12. Suddenly games had music and I could even play and record wav files. It connected to my CD-ROM so I could pipe CDs to the speakers. Easily my favorite computer upgrade of all time.
