Why should the we accept the continued downfall of public institutions, which is the ultimate consequence of austerity?

The public infratructure shrinks, while the rich get richer, partially from paid bond interesets. And you would just sit there and think, "yea, thats the way"?

Do you really think spending and not taxation is the problem? Eg. spending less on education leads to less gullable people, voting for harmful demagogues, so you finally get the "financial conervatives" you want?

And then eventually, water seeps in. Like in the german Asse II mine, that is planned to be evacuated, which will be a major challenge.

It might be true that nuclear power produces less waste but we have to consider the scales of global energy demand, multiply it by the time scales of nuclear waste to reach what threshold exactly? When and how would nuclear waste become a problem. Would it take ~200 years like the industrial revolution with CO2? Would it be okay if it where 300 years? or 500? What do we do, when background radiation is rising from ground water and soil? Switch back to natural instead of green energy, hoping the next millenias will be fine?

I dont think nuclear power is a solution. It can be step in an energy transition strategy, but no solution.

I agree with your notion, that we reciprocally amplify our cognitive deficiencies but i don't get how smaller communities would be a solution, considering global issues like climate change, which could still occur in such a world, combined with different biases like diffusion of responsibilities.

Cancellation or isolation does not help. I my opinion, education (or proper dialog) is the only option we have.

The Problem is, there is a fundamental contradiction between what a currency and what a investment is.

Unfortunately, cryptobros can enforce the latter and the system will go from decentral to federated to centralized.

I hope you can understand me.

Thank you for your optimism, now let me balance that out a little.

Propulsion maybe the easier part of engineering. Afaik we are nowhere near to life support and environment control that could be considered stable for a time period of maybe 10 years or more.

The biggest biological advantage, adaptation is meaningless for large organism on such a timescale and maybe dangerous on a microbial level.

It would save the community from re-doing the same analysis

I vaguely disagree. Secure software is not a well defined state so security analysis is not a process with an end condition, so theoretically, you can never stop looking.

But documenting failed attempts and methods is still worthy because duplicate work may still teach a lessons.

Exactly. It's the good old "government bad" trope. Thought process complete.

What is missing is, that the scientific process does not adhere to any ideal, in the long term. Think tobacco or sugar. Even the author almost mentions it but then decides for memes instead. So pathetic.

EDIT: And there is of course the part where unpromising ROI research is completely ditched and vanishes from the academic landscape, like pedagogic research. Or very risky foundational research where scientists barely scratch together funds, only to get bought up by hawking large corporations once the risks clears.

I disagree. Punishment is not a fix. Criminals don't consider "for 5 year prison i will do it for 10, i wont". Negative examples, like a rouge cop being shamed and convicted, is not strictly required, simple training of the cops misbehaviour leading to consequences would achieve the same.

you can't rely on just training cops to be "less bad"

Neither can punishment. My point is the individuals cognitive flaws that cause mistakes are a weak point of libertarian thinking. Everyone justifies their (bad) actions post hoc, barely anyone see themself as the bad guys and only education for other perspectives can change that.

talking about issues like unaccountable police in the language of individuality, accountability, and law and order is generally ignored.

The carrying narrative is instead "more training", as if simply training criminals better is all we need to get them to stop committing crimes!

Dont you agree that individuals are flawed? Some dated kind of homo economicus should't be your model of individuals. So how would you fix eg. the corruption of power, causing police men to overstep?

Who thought of this as a good idea? Ok, besides emergency response of public services or alike.

Air taxis are pure luxury, energy wasteful, begging for irresponsible usage and definitely not, what our littered airspace needs more of. Money well wasted for the headlines, because its so Muskian-futuristic.

I dont think you reached the core of the problem and i agree, that missing trust is an issue but not the primary one.

IMO cognitive deficiencies and the lack of education for counteraction and awareness are to blame.

Even on a non-profit platform, some sort of ideological mindset may seek to dominate debates by any measure. Same outcome, different motive.

It may appear inauthentic but is it really that unlikely that rich people can take on the global wealth mechanics from the position of the poor?

I once saw an interview with a switzer "Tax Me Now" supporter who inherited her wealth without ever having to do anything for it. I guess it's that disconnect to the own wealth, the missing feeling of having deserved it, that enables this stance. Unfortunately, on the other side it means that "geniuses" like Bezos, Musk, etc. may even have a stronger conviction for their good will in human history and project it onto the world.

Value is in the eye of the beholder.

This is a common true-ish sentence but too vague and in fact inadequate in this topic. The problem lies in how value is measured and this is imo the root of nowadays turmoil.

Ultimately valuable is, what satisfies essential needs (food, shelter, clothing, meds, etc), this is the bottom line. Gold is worthless on its own. Every society revolves around these needs and if not, that society may not last any longer. Only labor provides those values and thus sustains a society but not all members profit from it, "measured", the same way. Income from capital extracts out from labor value. The poor get poorer, while the rich get lazier.

I assume your plan with crypto/gold is to dodge a financial crisis but why should a future society respect the profiteers of the exploitative former? Maybe invest in something that enables labor, eg. land.

The Sucker Complex 5 years ago

Neither gold nor crypto will bring you to what ever "the other side" is (so much wistles).

Crypto currencies are bound to a functioning infrastructure and can be unpredictably volatile. Gold is no currency at all in the sense of a common trade value and this is the essence of it all. No, actually its labor. Labor is the only kind of value and any "worth" (eg money) has to be translatable to that. Crypto and gold is not.

Unfortunately, Mozilla does not have a track record of listening to their user base too and afaik they never had any monopoly. They just pushed their Track/Ad-Features out of desperation(?), which leads to the root of the problem: commodification of common goods like privacy and its resulting degradation.

Rust is known to leak memory, and compiled code can't rely on standard garbage collection.

Rust does not use GC but reference counts, you need to go out of your way and actively call for a memory leak. The part about the "explicit types required" in the the limitation sections sound weird to me too.

I see some do not appreciate this

It is the same approach to defend off phishing attacks in large corporations: shift the responsibility to the user.

In my opinion, this is just another scream for codified capabilities. Which would be a real solution and not just repeatedly a click away from disaster.

This is probably to influence housing prices

we have a problem with giant cities where you cannot even see the sky anymore...

Our problem is, that we externalize cost to much. Moral people take care of their waste/byproducts and side effects -- unless they can't see it. Like invisible CO2, overseas exploitation or paramounting debt. We have build our society and lifeforms on top of these externalities and some day will be pay day, so it is reasonable to either limit consumption or pay for sustainable disposal now. Compact cities reduce metabolic cost of our processes and you can't really bring the luxury argument while looking at the current over all decline.

This exact thinking leads to these bazillion dead and tortured. Better more totalitarianism to prevent an economic model, which could be revoked again in a democracy.

The world welcomes you too.
