im not op but im an offgrid farmer i use lead carbon batteries they have held up well. on a 5k inverter i run a 70 inch tv, stand alone freezer and a fridge/freezer. my home lab has been reduced to a few pis a unfi usg plus a couple of access points. i have an lte 4g ptp connection. i use gas for hot water and cooking (kinda cheating) woodfire in winter and i currently cook in summer but am working on a daytime solution with some extra panels and a second inverter -> reverse cycle. these batteries are 5 years old still going strong. only thing i dont run is stuff with an element like electric kettle. other than that no huge difference in quality of life.
my pihole is rate limiting my partners phone, up 20k + requests last hour to facebook et el. The rest of my non standard dns is holding up so far time will tell though, if the big boys get overwhelmed you might be correct.
The floury or mealy texture can happen regardless of variety, most of the apples you buy for the supermarket are up to a year old. they gas them with a chemical that stops ripening then keep them in a very low oxygen environment (usually on farm). it tends to cause the not nice floury texture.
my cows are too smart for electric fences. i set one up to separate 2 herds with a bull in each herd. the bulls will fight if the ladies are in season. they watched me set up the fence worked out that I placed the control box up at the same time the the fence got all zappy they pulled all the wires out of the control box. Cows are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.
i currently own a small cattle farm in rural australia and you are correct collars really are not a good solution not only do they rub on things but they love chewing on things especially rubber or plastic wires and electronics they would 100% chew on each others collars. We already use rfid ear tags which are small and unobtrusive and they still manage to occasionally rip those out, rubbing on things. If you were mustering a herd on a large holding say a few thousand hectares this could possibly be of some value at least in initially finding the herd however at least in my country if you are on a multiple k hectare property there is a good chance you wont have any sort of mobile coverage, also cows are creature of habit they have there daily grazing route they eat one place rest in another depending on time of day and weather conditions farmers typically know this. I will also add that the value proposition I have seen with other smart tags that are actual ear tags that do temp / heart rate etc etc does not add up at least with my small holding. the price per month of $5 per cow would eat into the already somewhat slim margins, the data is great but it isn't anything i would not notice by visually checking stock daily. im very skeptical on the faas model in general. Farmers at least in my country would balk at spending that sort of money a month that doesn't directly add very much in the way of weight / condition per month, at least from a beef cattle stand point. (perhaps on a prize bull you could justify the monthly fee)
im currently an off grid farmer i used to work in tech. the current iteration of solar panels are very reliable even the dirt cheap chinese panels will last 10 plus years. the screw pumps a really simple and only need the rubber screw replaced every few years. the pump controller is probably the most complex part that varies pump to pump, in theory you could solder something up very cheap if you just want an on off situation. going down 100 meters is a long way for a bore and not all ground water is equal, the better aquifers for irrigation are often a lot closer to the surface. to drill a bore you need a drilling rig. for an example in australia i had a bore put down it cost me $160 a meter so you can do the math on what a 100M hole would cost. (also no guarantee you hit water at all or its usable). this article while well meaning doesn't understand how farmers irrigate. while i dont contest the heroin output of afghanistan is going up i can't conclude its the access to solar pumps that are doing it.
Renoise isn't open source but is Linux native. Aducity is good for recording. And hydrogen is an ok drum machine.
the point of the tesla battery in south australia wasnt to provide base load continuous power it was to provide close to instant peaking power to smooth the grid it was directly competing with natural gas peaking plants. (which it beats)
If you are someplace like rural Australia the closest tech might be 1000km away.. if they haven't installed the hacked firmware they can't even service them without a tech or the tractor shuts down.
There are huge swathes of rural Australia with non existent or very spotty mobile reception same with broadband band other than sat that is geo stationery which are frankly garbage.

I'm not sure where you are in the world but in my country we absolutely do spend the vast majority of profit from harvest or the sale of stock reinvesting in farm infrastructure because when you do that it's a tax deduction if we didn't 30 % of your profit would go in tax. small farms may not buy large items but everyone that runs a farm does something similar in my country. I don't know how much these guys intend to charge a month but I know that the smart tag people for cattle want $5 a month a head for what is good data but the price makes it completely non viable.
Small scale farming absolutely does work as a business and the vast majority of farms (world wide) are in the sub 1000 hectare range. If you are talking sub 100 acre hobby farms then yeah they aren't a profitable main source of income (excluding some market garden operations)
Farming as a service won't work for smaller landholders (less than 1000 hectares) people on smaller farms have money to spend 2 or 3 times a year that is when they make investments that they can write off on tax (buying a tractor) all these agtech startups pushing farming as a service fundimentaly don't understand farming as a business.
For things like this and high end art it's normally stolen to order.
