Ask HN: Why do you read reviews?

Specifically reviews of entertainment products. I'm curious what people like to get out of reviews of things like movies, books, podcasts, etc.

Do you look at reviews for things you haven't purchased yet or do you look at them to better understand things that you've already seen? What are some of the best review sites/blogs that you like to visit?
