Ask HN: Where to find local groups with common interests?

Trying to release my inner-nerd by means of learning a new programming language and trying new miscellaneous hacks/tinkerings. Unfortunately, I have a hard time learning without a group setting. Where can I meet local hacker-groups or anything of the sort?
