Ask HN: How to go about Open Sourcing a product?

Our startup has a cloud storage gateway product that can talk to multiple cloud storage providers. This product has not seen a good uptake in India, due to a variety of reasons. We are considering open sourcing the product to gain higher visibility among the interested audience.

What are tactics used to open source a project, that can help us gain a good community & (hopefully) garner traction. I remember seeing a couple of links earlier this year on how to successfully open source a project. Unfortunately my search did not yield any useful results. Any pointers?
