The Use of Minimum Viable Products to Engage Users in Emerging Technologies

We all know about using a minimal viable product (MVP) as related to lean startups to learn quickly about user preferences / reactions to a new product. I think that the MVP approach is also a useful mechanism to transition users to an emerging technology platform or user experience that is significantly different than the norm. I believe that this is useful to prevent users from going into a state of "technology shock". For example, many users experienced a significant trauma from the introduction of the Metro interface in Windows 8. Such a radical change in design language consumed all at once can cause a sensory overload. Would it have been better to deliver these changes in bite-sized pieces?
