Deepseek is the signal you are looking for, that one spooked Big AI and the US authoritarians. Keep an eye on the hardware too, last I heard the CCP was only allowing the (no longer restricted for national security reasons (?)) N idia cards (H200s iirc)

This article focuses on their education system .. but the thing that is going to push China ahead is their electrical grid.

The US would have to heavily invest in their grid for the next 10 years to reach where China is currently.
