We really made the helm control system, specifically on the 51 class [destroyers], just overly complex, with the touch screens under glass and all this kind of stuff. We got away from the physical throttles, and that was probably the number-one feedback from the fleet – they said, just give us the throttles that we can use.

The problem seems to lie with the UX/UI of the touchscreens and not the screens themselves.

Had the screen made it clearer that only one side of the ship was being controlled, this wouldn’t have happened. And if the “physical” helm looked like a recording studio with 1000 identical knobs/levers/buttons, I could see the same crash happening.
