Here's an analogy. With phones, you own your phone number […] we just haven't had comparable competition in the social media space for a while now.

One of the problems with this analogy is that the competition being lauded only exists because of government regulatory action. Number portability isn’t there because of an “open network”, it’s there because a regulator requires it… if we existed in a sensible timeline Twitter et al would be required to provide account portability too.
